Elbow Park was annexed by the City of Calgary in 1910. The area was developed between 1911 and 1914. The neighbourhood takes its name from the Elbow River which curves through it.

Elbow Park is one of Calgary's oldest neighbourhoods. It is also one of its most affluent neighbourhoods. The median household income in Elbow Park is more than double the median household income in Calgary as a whole.

The homes in Elbow Park are large and luxurious. Many of them have been renovated or rebuilt in recent years. The neighbourhood has a very high rate of home ownership.

The Elbow Park trails can be accessed from the east side of the Elbow River, just south of the intersection of 37th Street SW and Glenmore Trail. There is a small parking lot and a pedestrian bridge that crosses the river.
