Photos of Mont Sutton

Mont Sutton (Round Top) is situated in Quebec's Eastern Townships. On the slopes of this mountain, we discover a ski resort known for the quality of its undergrowth. Fortunately, hikers can also enjoy more than 50 km of labeled paths maintained by a non-profit organisation: the Sutton Natural Environment Park (PENS). In addition, before starting your hike, you will have to head to the reception of this organization located at 900 Réal Road to pay your access charges and purchase a trail map.

Green mountain

The PENS path network enables you to climb to the top of four summits: the Round Top (968 metres), the Mont Gagnon (855 metres), the Dos d'Orignal (810 metres) and the Abénakis (732 metres). Obviously, the most popular of these summits is the Round Top with its belvedere, which provides an outstanding view of the Green Mountains.

In the distance, you will be able to differentiate the Jay Peak and Big Jay Mountains. For those who want to prevent the crowds of hikers heading to the Round Top, I suggest visiting the Abenaki summit instead. There is a small rock cape where you can see great points of perspective. You can swim in Mohawk Lake, too, after breaking the crust. For its portion, Mont Gagnon is mostly forested and has very little point of perspective. In my view, this is an environment that needs to be avoided unless, of course, it is in pursuit of tranquility. Located between the summits of the Round Top and Mont Gagnon, Spruce Lake is a wonderful place to rest and have a bite to eat. Finally, there is a series of views on the Dos d'Orignal ridge where you can see the ski resort and admire the Orford and Echo hills in the distance. These are the points of perspective that I believe are most interesting: L'Echine, L'Orford and the Dutch Summit. The data below relates to the 4 vertex loop on the same walk.

Beautiful view

Departure: After paying your access fee to the PENS reception, I recommend you park your vehicle in the primary parking lot of the Mont Sutton ski resort at the very end of Maple Street. Be cautious: there are a lot of junctions in the path network. However, the paths are very well recognized with the yellow tags on the trees. To make the loop of the 4 summits, it is necessary, first of all, to take the paths Fantaisie and Montée du Lac Mohawk to join the lake of the same name and the Abenakis summit. Then, with the assistance of the Estrie Trails, proceed to the Round Top summit and its renowned belvedere. Then follow the many instructions to Spruce Lake, Mud Pond and Dos d'Orignal. The return is via the Dos d'Orignal ridge and a short walk along Réal Street to reach the parking lot on Maple Street. Oh, Phew! In summary: I highly suggest buying a trail map to prevent confusion at the many junctions that you will experience during your day. Good hiking and great discovery!

Alternative: The options in the PENS trail network are unlimited. There's something for every taste. For those who are looking for a mid-level path, I suggest that you take the paths leading to the top of the Round Top (968 meters) from the reception (520 meters): about 6 km one way-return and 448 meters of elevation. CAUTION: Mountain Sutton trails are usually closed during the spring (mid-Aprilto mid-May) to maintain the ecosystems. For more data, please visit the Sutton Natural Environment Park website.

Really nice area. Trails are well maintained but sometimes too many exposed roots and rocks for worry free hiking for beginners
