I did Cascade Mountain first and took the Ridge over to Porter Mountain. I was underwhelmed with Porter, probably because I did Cascade first. The summit is not well defined, I kept looking for a better summit until I realized I was heading down the hill. I’m surprised this was even on the 46er list. I would do Cascade again, Porter not a chance. Too many better options in the area. Cascade and Porter are easy by 46er standards, so most healthy people can handle.

Another one star rating because of the poor Google Map directions. And Sean, it's not that I am upset with having to walk further. I am posting this on behalf of the private landowners who are getting tired of public hikers tearing up their steep, private road and then parking in their front yard. One landowner in the area has closed one of the trails to Porter Mountain just because of such problems.

The directions attached to this page for Porter Mountain use private roads that are NOT OPEN to the public. Public access to Porter Mt. from Keene Valley is either from the Garden Parking Lot (shorter, but fee and limited space) or Marcy Field between Keene and Keene Valley.

There is a trailhead at the end of a private drive that was open when we were there last week. It's a little hard to find but it's across from the Rooster Comb lot on Ranney Way. Just be respectful of the private property (don't park there, park at the Rooster Comb lot), stay on the drive and it will probably stay open. Also, I would suggest conferring with the Mountaineer (great local outdoor specialty store who gives great information and is happy to so), local hiking guide or the internet (All Trails or some other hiking site not Google Maps) if you have questions about trailheads and logistics instead of giving a one star rating.
