Trail description

Description

Zoo Ecomuseum is a year-round outdoor museum on the western tip of the island of Montréal that blends an easy, nature-trail stroll with a focused look at Québec wildlife. Instead of feeling like a city attraction, it’s set up as a compact, walkable “slice” of local habitats—forests, wetlands, and meadows—so you can move through different natural settings while spotting animals that belong here.

What makes this place different

This isn’t a typical zoo layout of long rows and indoor buildings. The Zoo Ecomuseum is dedicated to showcasing Québec’s biodiversity outdoors, across 11 hectares (27 acres) of landscaped natural areas. The animals you’ll see are native to the region, and the enclosures are designed to mimic the environments they would use in the wild, which makes the visit feel more like walking through habitats than “touring cages.”

It’s also a good fit if you like being outside even when you’re not tackling a major hike: you get fresh air, quiet trail time, and plenty to look at, without needing a big time commitment or technical footwear.

Trail experience and terrain

Plan on an easy walk along well-maintained paths that weave through multiple ecosystems. Over the course of the route, you’ll move between wooded sections, open meadow-like areas, and wetland zones where the atmosphere changes—more shade and leaf sounds in the forest, more open sightlines in the meadows, and more water-and-reed scenery near wetlands. Because the paths are maintained and the setting is within a defined outdoor museum, the experience feels approachable and low-stress, more like a nature walk than a backcountry hike.

If you’re coming specifically for a “hiking” fix, treat this as a short, scenic stroll with lots of stops. You’ll likely find yourself slowing down often to watch animals, read signage, and take photos, so the visit tends to be more wandering than steady-paced walking.

Wildlife you can see

The Zoo Ecomuseum is home to over 100 animal species native to Québec. The highlights mentioned most often by visitors include:

  • Birds of prey (a good reason to bring binoculars or a camera with zoom)
  • Otters, which are usually a favorite because they’re active and fun to watch
  • Lynxes, which can be harder to spot quickly—worth taking your time and scanning carefully

Because the goal is to mirror natural habitats, viewing can feel a bit like wildlife watching: sometimes animals are front and center, and other times you may need to pause quietly and look for movement. If you enjoy patient observation, this place rewards it.

Distance and difficulty

The walking route is about 2 km total, with roughly 10 m of elevation gain, and it’s considered easy. That makes it a solid option for a relaxed outing, a casual nature walk between errands, or an outdoor stop that still feels like you got time on the trail without committing to a longer hike.

Family-friendly and educational feel

This is an easy place to visit with kids, friends, or on your own. The site is set up as a “living classroom,” with interactive exhibits and informative signage throughout the park. As you walk, you’ll be able to learn about local species and wildlife conservation efforts in Québec, which gives the outing a bit more structure than simply wandering a park trail.

If you’re visiting as a group, it’s also easy to set your own pace: some people will want to linger at animal habitats, while others might be more focused on the walk itself. The layout supports both styles without feeling rushed.

When to go (and what it’s like in different seasons)

The Zoo Ecomuseum is open year-round, and the experience changes with the seasons. A warm summer visit feels like a leafy, green walk with plenty of time to stop and watch animals. In winter, a crisp winter morning can make the trails feel extra quiet and calm, with a different look and sound to the habitats as you move through them.

Because each season brings different conditions and animal behavior, it’s a place you can revisit and still feel like you’re seeing something new—whether it’s the landscape shifting or the way the animals use their spaces.

Planning tips

Bring comfortable walking shoes, and consider packing a camera since the whole point is getting close views of native wildlife. If you like to learn as you go, take your time with the signage and interactive displays—they’re a big part of what makes the experience feel purposeful rather than just a quick loop.

Before you go, check the Zoo Ecomuseum website for opening hours and any special events or activities that might be happening during your visit.

I went with my friend, and it was wonderful. The easy 2km walk through the zoo grounds was perfect for catching up while observing native wildlife. The flat terrain with only 10m elevation gain made for a comfortable stroll. We spent about 2 hours exploring all the exhibits and learning about Quebec's indigenous animals. Definitely planning to return!
