The mountain was named in 1916 after Sir John Lawrence Woolley, a British mountaineer and geologist. The first ascent of the mountain was made in 1924 by J. Norman Collie and party.

The Mount Woolley is a steep and rugged mountain, with several glaciers and icefields on its slopes. The most notable of these is the Woolley Glacier, which flows down the east side of the mountain. The mountain is a popular destination for climbers, with several routes up its slopes. The easiest route is the North Ridge, which is a moderate scramble.

The Mount Woolley trailhead is located in the Kananaskis Valley, approximately 60 km west of Calgary. To get there, take the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) west to the Kananaskis Village exit. Follow the signs to the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. The trailhead is located at the end of the park road.
