Why choose a trail at Puy-de-Dome?

Puy de Dôme culminates at 1,465 meters above sea level and is the highest volcano in the Puys chain. This mountain, classified as a major site in France, is located in the center of the central parcel of the Dome Mountains, about 15 kilometers from the city of Clermont-Ferrand, and can be reached on foot from the Ceyssat pass. Or even by cogwheel train.

It offers visitors a breathtaking 360° view and allows to see 80 volcanoes of various shapes of 45 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide...

The Puy de Dôme is a great site in France, protected and promoted. The trails that run through it and the height of 1,465 meters make it a real place of escape.

To the south of the Puy de Dôme, the relief is constantly changing and is covered more by beech forests or conifers. These dense forests, with their shimmering colors when autumn arrives, are the territory of raspberries and mushrooms, and they are a favorite of collectors.

The Puy de Dome is also a must-see place for free-flying activities such as paragliding and deltaplane.

Starting Point

The Puy de Dome site is 15 minutes from Clermont-Ferrand, direction Limoges, on the communes of Ceyssat and Orcines.

Why visit Puy-de-Dome

Goat Trail:

The north side of the trail is 6 kilometers long and takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours to walk.

Mule Trail:

On the south side, the muleteers' trail climbs from the Ceyssat pass to the top of Puy de Dôme, and climbs about 1.9 kilometers, descends 350 meters of elevation change. And about 45 minutes to 1 hour of walking.

Ps: The most pleasant thing is to walk the mule track first, take a little break at the bend, and enjoy the scenery stretching all the way to Puy de Sancy on a lucky day.

Pilgrim Trail:

It goes around the Temple of Mercury and leads to the archaeological sites and their development.

The Conquerors' Trail:

Lasting 35 minutes, it evokes sports, the adventures of Eugène Renaux, the experience of Blaise Pascal and the history of the Meteorological Observatory. It offers two panoramic views of the northern part of the Chaîne des Puys and the Limagne fault.

The path of the curious:

It makes you discover the fauna and flora at the top of the mountain and benefits from two additional viewpoints to the south of the Chaîne des Puys, the Sancy and the Combrailles.
