The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1867, and opened to the public in 1869. It is one of the first parks to feature a playground. The park has been renovated several times, most recently in 1995.

The park features a large lawn, a playground, a basketball court, a dog run, and several gardens. The Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument is located in the park, as is the Walt Whitman statue.
