With roughly 50 kilometers of trail and flat terrain across the entire network, this is flat hiking in the truest sense. The sandy soil underfoot drains fast and stays relatively firm, which means you're not fighting mud after rain the way you might in other parts of New Jersey. The terrain is shaped by ancient coastal geology—this land was once seafloor, and the sandy substrate that remains creates conditions unlike anything you'll find in the state's northern highlands.
The trail network here accommodates a wide range of paces and goals. Shorter loops work well for a relaxed morning walk or an easy evening stroll before settling in at camp. Longer routes push deeper into the forest and can take several hours to complete. Most visitors will pick sections rather than attempting everything at once.
