Description
The East Bay Bike Path stretches 14.5 miles along Rhode Island's eastern shoreline, following the route of the former Providence and Bristol Railroad. This paved rail trail connects Providence's India Point Park to Bristol, offering one of New England's most scenic cycling and walking experiences along Narragansett Bay.
Starting from Providence at India Point Park, the path crosses the Seekonk River via the George Redman Linear Park section, which opened in September 2015, then continues over the Washington Bridge before turning southeast to follow the bay's eastern shoreline. The route passes through East Providence, the hamlet of Riverside, and the townships of Barrington and Warren, providing a cross-section of Rhode Island's coastal communities.
Trail Experience and Terrain
The path's mostly flat terrain makes it accessible to cyclists, runners, walkers, and rollerbladers of all skill levels. The paved surface is well-maintained and clearly marked throughout its length, eliminating navigation concerns and allowing visitors to focus on the stunning bay views and surrounding landscapes.
What sets this trail apart is its consistent proximity to Narragansett Bay's shoreline. The converted railroad corridor provides an elevated perspective in many sections, offering unobstructed views across the water to the bay's many islands. The scenery changes subtly as you move between different coastal communities, from urban waterfront in Providence to quiet residential stretches in Barrington and Warren.
The trail's design as a former railroad means gentle grades and wide curves throughout the route. Multiple bridges cross inlets and waterways, providing elevated vantage points perfect for photography and taking in the expansive bay views. These water crossings break up the journey and offer some of the most memorable moments along the path.
The 14.5-mile length allows for flexible trip planning. You can tackle the entire route as a challenging day-long adventure or choose shorter segments based on your time and energy level. The multiple access points mean you can easily customize your distance and starting location.
Parks and Points of Interest
The East Bay Bike Path provides direct access to several significant recreational areas that enhance the overall experience. Haines State Park offers additional trails and picnic facilities, making it an excellent spot for extending your outdoor time beyond the main path.
Brickyard Pond in Barrington provides a peaceful spot for bird watching and nature observation. The pond's calm waters attract various waterfowl throughout the year, and the surrounding area offers a nice contrast to the open bay views that dominate much of the trail.
Colt State Park stands out as one of the trail's major highlights, featuring expansive lawns, historic buildings, and some of the finest bay views along the entire route. The park's well-maintained grounds and facilities make it a popular destination for families and a natural stopping point for longer rides.
Multiple smaller parks and beaches along the way serve as natural rest stops, each offering different amenities and perspectives on the bay. These stopping points break up longer journeys and provide opportunities to explore beyond the main trail. Several playgrounds make the path particularly appealing for families with children, giving kids a chance to burn energy while adults rest.
Community Character and Regional Context
The path's route through different communities means you'll experience varying landscapes and local character as you travel. East Providence and Riverside offer more urban settings with convenient access to shops and restaurants, perfect for grabbing supplies or a meal during your journey.
Barrington and Warren provide quieter, more residential stretches with classic New England coastal charm. These sections showcase beautiful waterfront homes and offer a more intimate feel compared to the busier urban portions near Providence.
As part of the ambitious East Coast Greenway, a 3,000-mile trail system connecting the Canadian border in Maine to Key West, Florida, the East Bay Bike Path represents a crucial link in this continental network. This connection gives local rides a sense of participation in a much larger recreational and transportation vision.
The trail's popularity is evident in its annual usage by 1.1 million people, making it one of Rhode Island's most heavily used recreational facilities. This high traffic reflects both the path's accessibility and the quality of the experience it provides, though it also means expecting company, especially on weekends and during peak seasons.
Planning Your Visit
The well-maintained paved surface accommodates standard bicycles, road bikes, and hybrid models equally well. The flat terrain means you won't need specialized gearing, making this an excellent choice for casual cyclists or those returning to cycling after time away from the activity.
Starting from Providence provides the full experience with urban-to-rural progression and access to the complete 14.5-mile route. Beginning from Bristol offers immediate access to some of the most scenic coastal sections if you're looking for maximum bay views with less distance.
Weather conditions along the bay can change quickly, and the exposed nature of much of the trail means wind can be a factor, particularly during spring and fall. The coastal location also means temperatures may be cooler than inland areas, especially during early morning or evening rides.
Parking is available at various points along the route, with India Point Park in Providence and several locations in the other communities providing convenient starting points. The multiple access points mean you can easily arrange one-way trips with pickup at different locations, or create loops by combining the bike path with local roads.
The path's popularity with families stems from its safety features—the separated rail trail design eliminates concerns about vehicle traffic for most of the route. The numerous parks and facilities along the way provide restrooms, water fountains, and picnic areas, making it practical for extended outings with children who need regular breaks and amenities.
