The Blanca Lake Trail is 12.9 km (8 miles) round trip with an elevation gain of approximately 1,049 m (3,440 ft). Most hikers take 5-7 hours to complete the hike.
Blanca Lake is rated as a Hard hike due to the significant elevation gain, numerous switchbacks, steep terrain, and the challenging descent at the end.
The trail is typically accessible from mid-July through October. Fall offers the most stable weather conditions, though snow can linger into summer at higher elevations. Winter is not recommended due to heavy snowfall and avalanche danger.
Bring a Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass for parking. Trekking poles are highly recommended for the steep descent. Download offline maps before your visit, as the road to the trailhead is rough gravel with potholes.
Blanca Lake's distinctive turquoise color comes from glacier-fed meltwater containing finely ground rock flour, suspended by the grinding action of Blanca Lake Glacier and Columbia Glacier above the lake.
