Trail description

Description

Selkirk Park sits along the Red River in Manitoba's Interlake region, just minutes from the town of Selkirk. It's the kind of place that works equally well for a quick solo walk or a relaxed family afternoon — easy to reach, easy to navigate, and genuinely pleasant to spend time in. The 2.5 km trail network keeps things manageable, with only about 15 metres of elevation change across the whole route, so you're never working hard to get somewhere good.

Trail System and Terrain

The trails here are well-maintained and clearly marked, winding through a mix of forest and open riverbank. With a total distance of 2.5 km and minimal elevation gain, most people complete the loop in around 45 minutes at a comfortable pace — though it's easy to stretch that out if you stop to watch the river or let kids explore along the way.

The terrain shifts as you move through the park. Wooded sections bring you under a mixed canopy of deciduous and coniferous trees, the kind of forest typical of Manitoba's boreal transition zone. The light filters through differently depending on the time of day, and the shade makes these stretches noticeably cooler in summer. Then the trail opens up toward the riverbank, where the views widen and the sound of the Red River takes over. These two environments — forest and waterfront — give the walk more variety than the short distance might suggest.

The paths are suitable for beginners and anyone looking for an easy outing. There's nothing technical here, no scrambling or route-finding required. The flat, well-groomed surface also makes this a good option for families with young children or anyone who wants a nature walk without committing to a strenuous hike.

The Red River Setting

The park's location along the Red River is its defining feature. Walking the riverbank sections gives you a different pace and feel compared to the wooded trail — wider open sky, the movement of the water, and a sense of space that's hard to find in a park this close to town. The riverbank also offers natural spots to stop, sit, and take in the view without needing a designated lookout point.

The interaction between the river and the surrounding forest creates a riparian environment that supports a range of wildlife. Deer move through the wooded areas regularly, and the varied habitat draws a solid mix of bird species — forest birds in the canopy, waterfowl along the river. Early morning is the best time for wildlife activity, but even a midday walk tends to turn up something worth watching.

Facilities and Amenities

Selkirk Park is set up for more than just hiking. Picnic tables are scattered through the park in spots that make good use of the scenery, and the open grassy areas give families room to spread out between trail sections. There's a playground on-site as well, which makes it easy to combine a walk with time for kids to burn off energy.

Parking is available directly at the park, and the proximity to the town of Selkirk means you're never far from supplies or a place to eat before or after your visit. That convenience is part of what makes this park work well for spontaneous outings — you don't need to plan much to make a trip here worthwhile.

What to Know Before You Go

Manitoba weather can shift quickly, and the riverside location adds its own layer — it tends to be cooler near the water, and humidity can be higher along the Red River than you'd expect. Layers are a reliable choice regardless of the season. Bringing bug spray in summer is worth it, particularly near the riverbank where insects are more active in the warmer months.

The varied scenery — forest light, river reflections, open sky — makes this a rewarding place to bring a camera. The short distance means you can take your time without rushing, and the different environments give you genuinely different shots within a single loop.

Selkirk Park is a straightforward, accessible outdoor destination that delivers a genuine connection to the natural landscape of Manitoba's Interlake region without asking much in return.

Perfect spot for evening walks after work with accessible trails that aren't overly challenging. The park effectively connects different natural areas, providing a wonderful green escape from urban life. Parking can become limited during peak times, so I recommend arriving early in the morning or later in the evening for the best experience.

Winter visit revealed well-groomed trails perfect for snowshoeing activities. The park maintains a peaceful, secluded atmosphere despite its proximity to town. Limited facilities are available during colder months, but the natural beauty compensates for this shortcoming. It's an excellent option for those seeking a quiet winter retreat without extensive travel.

Excellent birdwatching destination with diverse wildlife throughout the park. I observed numerous waterfowl species near the wetland areas and various songbirds in the forested sections during my early morning visit. The variety of habitats creates ideal conditions for wildlife observation, so definitely bring binoculars and a field guide to maximize your experience.
