Description
Tucked into the quieter corners of Nova Scotia's Evangeline Trail, Millet Falls is the kind of place that rewards hikers who prefer discovery over crowds. The waterfall is the clear draw here — water tumbling over weathered rock formations into clear pools below — but the forest walk leading to it is genuinely pleasant in its own right, not just a means to an end.
At 1.5 km with only 50 metres of elevation gain, this is an easy trail that most people will complete in around 45 minutes. That makes it a solid choice for families with younger kids, anyone easing back into hiking, or visitors who want a meaningful outdoor experience without committing to a full day on the trail.
The Trail
The path winds through classic Maritime mixed forest — maples and birches overhead, spruce and fir filling in the gaps, and a forest floor that shifts character depending on the season. The terrain is generally manageable, though tree roots cross the path in spots and the proximity to water means you can expect damp or muddy sections even when it hasn't rained recently. Sturdy footwear with decent grip is the right call here.
The route follows alongside moving water for stretches of the walk, which builds a nice sense of anticipation before the falls come into view. The trail is well-marked, so navigation isn't something you'll need to think about — you can just focus on what's around you.
The Falls
Millet Falls drops over a series of rock ledges, pooling in basins at the base. The sound carries well through the surrounding forest, and you'll hear the falls before you see them. The pool area at the bottom is a natural place to stop — there's rocky ground to sit on, multiple angles to take in the view, and enough space that it doesn't feel cramped even with other visitors around.
The falls are at their most dramatic after heavy rainfall or during spring snowmelt, when the volume of water increases significantly. In drier summer months, the flow drops and more of the underlying rock structure becomes visible, which has its own appeal. The setting stays wild throughout — no viewing platforms or developed infrastructure, just the falls and the forest.
What to Bring
This is a short trail, so you don't need to overpack. That said, a few things are worth having:
- Footwear with grip — roots and moisture make trail runners or hiking boots a better choice than casual shoes
- Water — even on a short hike, especially in warmer months
- A snack or packed lunch — the falls area is a genuinely nice spot to sit and eat
- A camera — the falls photograph well, and the forest light along the trail is worth capturing too
Leave It as You Found It
Millet Falls doesn't have the infrastructure of a developed park, which is part of what makes it feel like a real find. Staying on the marked trail protects both the surrounding vegetation and the experience for the next person who comes through. Pack out everything you bring in — the remote setting means litter doesn't disappear on its own.
It's a straightforward place to visit responsibly, and keeping it that way is what ensures it stays worth visiting.
