Description
Prince of Wales Falls — also commonly known as Hog's Back Falls — sits right within Ottawa's city limits along the Rideau River, making it one of the most accessible waterfall destinations in the region. Despite being surrounded by residential neighborhoods, the falls deliver a genuinely impressive natural experience. The Rideau River drops through a series of limestone ledges here, creating cascading water features that draw visitors year-round and feel far more wild than you'd expect from an urban setting.
This is the kind of place you can visit on a weekday lunch break or turn into a relaxed half-day outing. The sound of rushing water over the rocky ledges is immediate and immersive — it has a way of drowning out the city noise and pulling your attention fully into the natural environment around you.
Trail Experience and Terrain
The trail network around Prince of Wales Falls is well-maintained and accessible to a wide range of visitors. The terrain is largely flat to gently rolling, with a 10-metre elevation change that keeps things easy underfoot. You won't be grinding up steep climbs here — the focus is on the river, the falls, and the surrounding landscape rather than any serious physical challenge.
Paths wind through mixed forest and along the riverbank, passing through stands of mature pine and deciduous trees. Small wooden bridges, rocky outcrops, and natural ledges break up the route and give you different ways to engage with the landscape. Some sections bring you right to the edge of the falls, where you can feel the mist and hear the full force of the water. Others pull back to offer wider views across the river and the surrounding green space.
Trail surfaces are generally solid and well-established, though spring and wet periods can make things muddy in spots. Appropriate footwear goes a long way toward keeping the experience comfortable regardless of season.
The Falls Themselves
The waterfall system here is the main draw, and it earns the attention. The Rideau River pushes through a series of limestone ledges, creating multiple cascades rather than a single dramatic drop. The result is a layered, dynamic water feature that changes character depending on water levels and season.
Spring runoff is when the falls are at their most powerful — snowmelt and spring rains push significant volume through the ledges, and the roar of the water carries well beyond the immediate viewpoints. Summer brings steadier, calmer flow, while fall frames the whole scene in red, orange, and yellow foliage that reflects off the moving water. Winter is its own thing entirely: ice formations build up around the falls and on surrounding rocks and vegetation, creating a frozen landscape that's worth the extra effort of bundling up for.
Viewpoints and Photography
Multiple vantage points are scattered around the falls, each offering a different perspective. Some give you a sweeping look at the full waterfall system; others put you close enough to the water that the mist reaches you. The limestone ledges and rocky outcrops work naturally as foreground elements for photography, adding texture and depth to waterfall shots.
Early morning and late afternoon light filter through the tree canopy in ways that make the falling water particularly striking. The surrounding forest, river views, and seasonal vegetation changes give photographers plenty to work with beyond just the falls themselves. That said, you don't need a camera to get something out of this place — there are plenty of spots along the trails where sitting quietly and taking in the sound and movement of the water is the whole point.
Seasonal Highlights
Each season brings a noticeably different character to Prince of Wales Falls, which is part of why it holds up as a repeat destination for Ottawa locals.
- Spring: Peak water flow, emerging foliage, and wildflowers along the trails. The falls are at their most dramatic during this window.
- Summer: Fully leafed trees create shaded corridors, the forest is at its greenest, and conditions are comfortable for extended exploration.
- Fall: The mixed forest puts on a strong colour show. The contrast between autumn foliage and moving water makes for some of the year's best scenery.
- Winter: Ice formations transform the falls into something quieter and more sculptural. Traction devices or winter boots are a good idea given potentially slippery conditions on the rocks and paths.
Access and Practical Information
Prince of Wales Falls is easy to reach from downtown Ottawa by car or public transit. Designated parking is available near the falls, though spots fill up quickly on weekends and during good weather — arriving earlier in the day helps on both counts. The accessible terrain and short distances involved make this a solid option for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking for a quick nature fix without leaving the city.
Checking current trail conditions before heading out is always worthwhile, particularly in spring when mud and high water can affect access near the riverbank.
