Cape Sable is exceptional for wildlife, even by Everglades standards. The beaches and adjacent shallows are critical habitat for a range of species:

• Shorebirds and wading birds are abundant along the waterline — snowy plovers, willets, roseate spoonbills, and great blue herons are regular sights.
• Sea turtles nest on the beaches during summer months. Loggerhead and green sea turtles both use this stretch of coastline.
• Bottlenose dolphins are frequently spotted in the nearshore waters.
• Manatees move through the area, particularly in the calmer waters near the cape.

Biting insects — mosquitoes and no-see-ums — are a constant presence, especially from late spring through fall. Bug protection is not optional here. Long sleeves, head nets, and a quality repellent will make the difference between a miserable trip and a memorable one.
