Discover the 10 Best Easy Family Hikes in Quebec for Unforgettable Nature Adventures

Looking for easy family hikes in Quebec to introduce your kids to the outdoors without discouraging them? Perfect! After covering hundreds of trails with my own family (and surviving a few mountain meltdowns), I can tell you that choosing the right hike makes all the difference between a memorable outing and a family nightmare.

The secret is to start small and prioritize wonder over performance. A waterfall, a lake, rocks to climb, or blueberries to pick are worth a thousand times more than a summit conquered through tears. In this guide, I share my 10 favorites tested and approved by dozens of Quebec families.

🏔️ How to choose a perfect hike for the whole family?

Before diving into my list, let me share the criteria that make a hike really work with children. I learned this the hard way after dragging my nephews on an 8 km trail "easy according to AllTrails" that turned into a marathon of negotiations!

The golden rule: 1 km per year of age, maximum. A 6-year-old can do 6 km, but start with 3-4 km to test. And count on 2-3 times more time than expected — children stop for everything: a shiny rock, an ant, a puddle.

💡 Pro tip — Always choose a trail with a "consolation prize" halfway: a bridge, a beach, a viewpoint. If things go south, you can turn back with something positive to show.

My essential criteria for a successful family hike:

  • Maximum 300m positive elevation gain for beginners
  • Wide and well-maintained trail (fewer fall risks)
  • Motivating visual objective: waterfall, lake, viewpoint
  • Accessible parking and nearby restrooms
  • Picnic possibility on site

🌲 The 10 best easy family hikes in Quebec

Here's my personal selection, tested with families from all backgrounds. I've organized them by region to help you plan your getaways based on where you live.

Montreal and Montérégie Region

1. Parc du Mont-Royal — The perfect urban classic to start with. The Mont-Royal trail offers several options depending on your crew's energy. My favorite route: Beaver Lake → Kondiaronk Belvedere (2.5 km). Kids love the squirrels and the city view always impresses them.

2. Parc Michel-Chartrand (Longueuil) — A little-known gem! The Parc Michel-Chartrand trail network offers 1 to 4 km loops through a magnificent maple grove. Perfect in autumn, and children can observe birds at the feeders.

3. Mont Saint-Bruno — My five favorite lakes for families! Parc national du Mont Saint-Bruno offers the lakes trail (3.2 km) that passes by three different lakes. Children can swim in summer and there are perfect picnic areas.

Quebec City Region

4. Canyon Sainte-Anne — Spectacular and accessible! The Canyon Sainte-Anne trail features suspension walkways that delight children. Several difficulty levels, but even the easiest (1.2 km) offers breathtaking views of the falls.

5. Chutes Jean-Larose — My favorite for families with young children. The Chutes Jean-Larose only require a 20-minute walk on an easy trail, and the reward is magnificent: a 25-meter waterfall with a natural pool.

⚠️ Warning — Even on "easy" trails, always keep your children close near waterfalls and waterways. Wet rocks are treacherous and currents can be stronger than they appear.

Laurentides and Lanaudière

6. Parc John H. Molson — A well-kept secret! Parc John H. Molson offers varied trails with viewpoints over Lac des Deux-Montagnes. The main trail (2.8 km) is perfect for families and there's a beautiful beach to cool off afterward.

7. Mont Yamaska — For families ready to take on a small challenge! Mont Yamaska offers several trails, but I recommend the Étangs trail (3.5 km) that leads to a viewpoint with panoramic views. It climbs a bit, but it's worth it!

Centre-du-Québec and Charlevoix

8. Parc du Mont Arthabaska — Ideal for a first "real" mountain! The main Mont Arthabaska trail (2.1 km) leads to an observation tower. Children are proud to "conquer" their first summit, and the 360° view rewards their efforts.

9. Mont du Lac des Cygnes — For adventurous families visiting Charlevoix. Mont du Lac des Cygnes offers a 4 km trail with a breathtaking view of the river. More demanding, but perfect for children 8 years and older.

10. Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie — The grand finale! For experienced families, the Chute trail (3.8 km) offers breathtaking landscapes. It's more demanding, but the experience is worth it.

🎒 Essential equipment for family hiking

After years of forgetting important stuff (and improvising with what we had on hand), I've developed my foolproof family equipment list. Nothing fancy, just the essentials to keep everyone comfortable and safe.

For parents:

  • Backpack with hydration compartment — You'll be carrying everyone's water
  • Compact first aid kit — Bandages, disinfectant, ibuprofen
  • Energy snacks — Granola bars, dried fruit, emergency chocolate
  • Plastic bags — For trash, wet clothes, found "treasures"

For children:

  • Their own small backpack — With their water bottle and favorite snacks
  • Change of clothes — Especially socks and a dry shirt
  • Hat and sunglasses — Even in the forest, sun can be tricky
  • Safety whistle — In case they wander too far
📌 Good to know — Invest in good beginner hiking shoes. Well-supported ankles prevent 90% of trail injuries, especially in children who watch butterflies more than where they step!

🌟 My tricks to motivate children on the trail

The difference between a magical hike and a family ordeal is often in the small details. Here are my field-tested strategies to keep children motivated and enthusiastic.

Before leaving

Involve them in planning. Show them photos of the trail, let them choose their snacks, explain what they'll see. A child who knows they'll see a waterfall or look for frogs is already half motivated.

Make sure to ask yourself the right questions before leaving — it avoids unpleasant surprises that can ruin the family outing.

During the hike

Turn it into a game! My classics that work every time:

  • Nature bingo — Find a squirrel, a red rock, a heart-shaped leaf
  • Official photographer — Give a camera (or your old phone) to a child
  • Junior guide — Let a child "lead" the group in sections
  • Treasure hunt — Hide some surprises along the trail (if you know the route)
"The secret is celebrating small victories: the first kilometer, halfway point, the first view. Children need to feel they're making progress."

Manage breaks strategically. A break every 20-30 minutes with younger ones, and use it for a snack or quick game. It's better than waiting until they're exhausted and having to negotiate.

💡 Pro tip — Always bring more snacks than necessary. A hungry child becomes grumpy, and a grumpy child contaminates the whole family. Chocolate remains my secret weapon for difficult moments!

🚨 Avoiding classic family hiking mistakes

I've seen so many families make the same mistakes (and I've made my share too!). Here are the most common pitfalls and how to avoid them so your outing remains enjoyable.

Mistake #1: Starting too late in the day
Children have more energy in the morning, and you avoid crowds and afternoon heat. My advice: departure at 9am latest for long hikes.

Mistake #2: Underestimating the time needed
Multiply by 2 or 3 the estimated time on apps. Children stop constantly, and that's okay! That's what wonder is about.

Mistake #3: Forgetting to check weather AND trail conditions
A trail can be closed, muddy or dangerous even if the weather is nice. Call the park or check their website before leaving.

To avoid the most common beginner mistakes, I highly recommend reading my guide on the 10 mistakes all hiking beginners make.

🏞️ Hikes by season: when to go with children

Each season in Quebec offers its advantages for family hiking, but also its challenges. Here's how I adapt my outings according to the time of year.

Spring (May-June)

This is my favorite season to introduce children! The temperature is cool, mosquitoes not yet too aggressive, and nature is awakening. However, watch out for mud and trails sometimes closed due to thaw.

My spring recommendations: Mont-Royal, Canyon Sainte-Anne, Chutes Jean-Larose. Avoid mountain trails that may still have snow.

To prepare well, check out my guide to prepare your first spring hike in Quebec.

Summer (July-August)

Perfect for long hikes and swimming! But leave early to avoid heat, and bring LOTS of water. Trails with lakes are perfect: Mont Saint-Bruno, Parc John H. Molson.

⚠️ Warning — In summer, ticks are active. Long clothing in tall grass, complete inspection after hiking, and don't hesitate to consult if you find an attached tick.

Fall (September-October)

The magical season! Colors are spectacular and temperature perfect. It's the ideal time for photo hikes with children. All my recommended trails are magnificent in fall.

Winter (November-April)

More difficult with young children, but not impossible! Favor wide and well-maintained trails. Snowshoes on feet and hot chocolate in the thermos, and it becomes an unforgettable adventure.
