Trail description

{
"opening_paragraph": "

Chutes Jean Larose is one of those hikes near Quebec City that earns its reputation without making a big fuss about it. Located near Mont-Sainte-Anne in Beaupré, in the Quebec City region, it's the kind of trail that works for a wide range of people — families, casual hikers, and anyone who wants a genuine nature experience without committing to a full-day expedition.

",
"what_trail_is_like": "

The route covers 5.1 to 10 km (depending on variations) with 167 m of elevation gain, rated Easy to Moderately Challenging, and most people complete it in around 1.5 to 3 hours. That combination puts it squarely in half-day territory — enough distance to feel like a real outing, enough elevation change to give your legs something to do, but nothing that requires technical skills or serious fitness preparation.

The trail is well-maintained and moves through shaded forest for much of the route. You settle into a steady pace quickly, and the environment does a good job of pulling your attention away from whatever you were thinking about before you got here. The sound of the forest — birds, wind in the canopy, and eventually the growing sound of moving water — builds gradually as you make your way toward the falls. It's the kind of hike where the journey feels as worthwhile as the destination, even though the destination is genuinely impressive.

",
"falls_section": "

The main draw is the waterfall, and it delivers. Chutes Jean Larose drops 60 to 68 meters (197-224 feet) across three distinct tiers, which gives the whole thing a layered, dynamic look that a single-drop waterfall doesn't have. The waterfall is accessed via a staircase of approximately 350 steps that border the falls and provide access to spectacular viewpoints. You can also complete a circular loop, climbing 400 steps one direction for excellent exercise, or descending counter-clockwise for an easier return. Your eye moves from one level to the next, and the overall scale tends to catch people off guard — it's bigger and more dramatic than the easy trail rating might lead you to expect.

Swimming is allowed at the falls, so bring your bathing suit if you wish to cool off after your hike. The sound at the base is part of the experience. It's worth slowing down here, taking your time with photos, and just sitting with it for a few minutes before heading back. The falls photograph well in summer when the surrounding forest is fully green, and they're equally strong in autumn when the trees shift into fall colour — the contrast between the white water and the orange and red canopy makes for a compelling scene.

",
"getting_there": "

Chutes Jean Larose sits near Mont-Sainte-Anne in Beaupré, which makes it a natural fit if you're already spending time in that area. The trailhead is located on Route 360 just after the Mont-Sainte-Anne traffic light — parking is available to your right, just past the bridge. It also works well as a standalone day trip from Quebec City, approximately 30 minutes away — close enough to be practical, far enough to feel like you've actually left the city behind. With an estimated hiking time of 1.5 to 3 hours, you can realistically plan this as a morning outing and still have the afternoon free for other stops nearby.

",
"what_to_bring": "

Treat this like any standard day hike. Sturdy hiking shoes are worth it — the trail is easy-to-moderate-rated but still has enough variation underfoot and 350 stairs to navigate that proper footwear makes a noticeable difference in comfort. Bring water and snacks, especially if you're hiking with kids or planning to spend extra time at the falls. If you plan to swim, bring a bathing suit and towel. There are no facilities at the waterfall itself, so handle everything before you head out and plan to be self-sufficient on the trail. Nearby amenities are available in the area for before or after the hike.

The Chutes Jean Larose trail provides excellent value despite being a paid access site. The 10km route with 167m elevation offers manageable challenge levels for most hikers. Construction work was underway during my visit to improve the trail infrastructure, which shows promising commitment to enhancing visitor experience.

Beautiful 10km trail in the Quebec City region with gorgeous waterfall scenery, but the infrastructure needs attention. The staircase leading to the main viewpoint is damaged, which is disappointing for a paid access site. Despite the maintenance issues, the natural beauty and manageable 167m elevation gain make it worth visiting once repairs are completed.

The morning mist from the falls creates an almost magical atmosphere, and the early hours provide peaceful solitude. Wonderful family-friendly hike that my 8 and 10-year-old children thoroughly enjoyed. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, with beautiful wildflowers throughout the route. The sound of the falls in the distance kept us motivated, though the final section can be slippery during wet conditions.

Hiked this trail in early spring when some sections were still muddy and challenging to navigate. However, the fresh air and lack of crowds made for a pleasant experience. Spotted several songbirds and wildlife along the way, which added to the enjoyment. This location will likely be spectacular once the ground stabilizes in summer.
