Rob's Trail at Hemlock Lake delivers one of the most rewarding moderate hikes in New York's Finger Lakes region. This trail winds through dense hemlock forests and hugs the pristine shoreline of Hemlock Lake, offering hikers a perfect blend of woodland walking and lakeside scenery. The trail forms part of a larger network connecting Hemlock and Canadice Lakes, two of the area's most unspoiled bodies of water.
What sets this trail apart is its role as both a scenic hiking destination and a protected watershed for Rochester. The combination means you'll experience remarkably clean, undeveloped surroundings while enjoying well-maintained paths. The trail quickly heads downhill leading to the shores of Hemlock Lake and then walks along the water heading north. Be prepared for the steep hike out on the way back to the trailhead.
Trail Experience and Terrain
The path begins from The Nature Conservancy Rob's Trail Preserve and immediately enters Hemlock-Canadice State Forest, immersing you in the towering hemlock forest that gives the lake its name. These ancient trees create a natural cathedral effect, with filtered sunlight streaming through the canopy and a soft carpet of needles underfoot. The main loop is a relatively flat walk of about 2 miles through the forest.
As you progress along the route, the trail alternates between deeper forest sections and openings that reveal stunning lake views. Hemlock Lake stretches out as a narrow, pristine body of water surrounded by undeveloped shoreline—a rarity in the increasingly developed Finger Lakes region. The trail surface varies between packed earth and occasional rocky sections, but nothing that requires technical hiking skills.
The well-maintained condition of the path reflects its importance as part of the watershed protection area. You'll find the trail clearly marked at key junctions, reducing navigation concerns and allowing you to focus on the natural surroundings. This distance makes this an ideal choice for a half-day outing, whether you're planning an out-and-back hike or using it as part of a longer exploration of the Hemlock-Canadice trail network.
A connecting trail to Canadice Lake is located at the bench near the main loop. Please note that the connecting trail is steep. Be aware of private property in the area.
Wildlife and Natural Features
The protected status of the Hemlock Lake area creates exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. Deer are commonly spotted throughout the hike, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon hours. The diverse habitat supports foxes, and patient hikers often catch glimpses of these elusive animals. The bird life is particularly impressive, with the mix of mature forest and water edge attracting species that thrive in both environments.
The hemlock trees themselves represent one of the trail's most significant natural features. These evergreens create a unique microclimate that supports specialized flora and fauna. Beneath the hemlock canopy, you'll notice different understory plants compared to typical deciduous forests in the region. The trees also provide year-round visual interest, maintaining their deep green color even during winter months when the deciduous trees are bare.
The lake's pristine condition stems from its role as a protected watershed. This means the water quality remains exceptionally high, and the surrounding environment shows minimal human impact. The shoreline areas accessible from the trail reveal the kind of natural lake edge that has become increasingly rare in developed regions.
Seasonal Considerations
Rob's Trail offers distinct experiences throughout the year, with each season bringing its own rewards. Fall transforms the mixed forest into a spectacular display of colors, with the evergreen hemlocks providing a dramatic backdrop to the changing maples and oaks. The autumn months also offer some of the best wildlife viewing, as animals prepare for winter.
Winter hiking presents peaceful landscapes with snow-covered trails and frozen lake views. The hemlock trees hold snow on their branches, creating a winter wonderland effect. However, winter hikers should be prepared for potentially icy conditions and should bring appropriate footwear with good traction.
Spring brings wildflowers to the forest floor and increased bird activity as migratory species return. Summer offers the fullest canopy cover and the most comfortable hiking temperatures, though it's also the busiest season for trail use.
Planning Your Visit
The trailhead is located off Route 15A near Springwater, NY, with parking available at the designated area at the northern most intersection. This location provides easy access while maintaining the trail's sense of remoteness once you begin hiking. The parking area can accommodate multiple vehicles, but arriving early during peak seasons ensures you'll find a spot and experience the trail at its most peaceful.
Essential gear includes water, snacks, and appropriate footwear with good tread for the varied trail surfaces. While the trail doesn't present technical challenges, sturdy hiking shoes or boots provide better comfort and safety than casual sneakers. Bringing layers allows you to adjust for temperature changes, especially in the shaded forest sections.
The trail's design makes it suitable for both casual walkers and seasoned hikers seeking a moderate challenge. Families with children who are comfortable with round-trip distances will find this an excellent introduction to Finger Lakes hiking. The clear trail markings and well-maintained path reduce concerns about navigation or difficult terrain.
Respecting the Leave No Trace principles is particularly important given the area's role as a protected watershed. This means packing out all trash, staying on designated trails, and avoiding any activities that could impact water quality. The pristine condition of Hemlock Lake depends on continued careful stewardship by all visitors.
Plan for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the main loop comfortably, allowing time to enjoy the lake views and wildlife observation opportunities. This timing works well for a morning or afternoon outing and leaves room for exploring the connecting trail to Canadice Lake if you're looking for a longer day outdoors.
