Trail description

Description

Sugar Creek Glen Campground sits in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of New York, tucked into a wooded glen where Sugar Creek winds through the landscape. It's the kind of place where the campground itself doubles as a trailhead, giving you easy access to a quiet, forested walk without having to drive anywhere first. The trail here is approachable for just about anyone — families, casual hikers, and anyone looking to stretch their legs after setting up camp.

The Trail

The main hiking route at Sugar Creek Glen Campground covers 3.2 km with a gentle elevation gain of 61 meters, rated Easy. Plan on about 1 hour and 15 minutes for a comfortable out-and-back or loop at a relaxed pace. The modest elevation change means you're not grinding up any steep pitches — the terrain rolls gently through the glen, following the natural contours of the creek valley.

The trail moves through a mix of mature deciduous forest typical of the Finger Lakes uplands. Canopy cover is dense enough to keep things cool even on warmer days, and the creek stays close enough that you can hear it for much of the walk. The path underfoot is generally well-defined and manageable, making it a solid choice for hikers who want a genuine woods experience without technical challenges.

What Makes This Spot Worth Your Time

The Finger Lakes region is known for its gorges, waterfalls, and deep glacially-carved valleys, and Sugar Creek Glen fits right into that character. The glen itself has the kind of enclosed, sheltered feel that's common to creek-carved hollows in this part of New York — mossy banks, filtered light through the tree canopy, and the constant background sound of moving water. It's a noticeably different atmosphere from the open farmland and vineyard country that dominates much of the region.

Because the trailhead is based at the campground, this is a particularly convenient option if you're spending a night or two in the area. You can head out for an early morning walk before the day heats up, or wind down with an evening stroll along the creek. The low difficulty level also makes it a good pick for mixed groups where not everyone is an experienced hiker.

Practical Information

  • Distance: 3.2 km
  • Elevation gain: 61 m
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Estimated time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Region: Finger Lakes, New York
  • Access: Trail access is through Sugar Creek Glen Campground

Wear sturdy footwear with decent grip — creek-side trails in the Finger Lakes can have rooty or muddy sections depending on recent weather. The glen environment tends to stay damp, so even in dry stretches the trail can be slick in spots near the water.

Getting There

Sugar Creek Glen Campground is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. If you're coming from outside the area, the Finger Lakes are well-connected by state routes running between the major towns in the region. Check current campground access and any reservation requirements directly with the campground before your visit, as policies and seasonal hours can vary.

Whether you're based at the campground for the weekend or just stopping in to hit the trail, Sugar Creek Glen offers a genuine slice of Finger Lakes forest that's easy to enjoy without a lot of planning or preparation.

The creek hike through the waterfalls was absolutely stunning! Five beautiful cascades with crystal clear water and great swimming holes. The trail is essentially a creek walk, so expect to get wet, but it's worth every step. Kids loved the rope swings, though parents should supervise as some areas are slippery. Perfect for cooling off on hot summer days.

Returned to this hidden gem after visiting as a child. The waterfall hike is easy and family-friendly, taking about an hour to complete. Clean facilities with hot showers, though you'll need quarters for shower operation. Some tent sites are on gravel which wasn't ideal, but the creek access and peaceful atmosphere more than made up for it.

Returned here after our first visit last year and it was even better than we remembered. The creek offers excellent hiking, fishing, and swimming opportunities all in one location. The camp store has been renovated and stocks everything you could need. Bathrooms are always spotless and the showers maintain perfect temperature. This family-friendly campground has become our annual tradition and we can't wait to come back.

Beautiful creek setting with multiple waterfalls right on the property. The hiking trail follows the creek bed with no parallel path, so waterproof boots recommended. Great for families with older kids who can handle moderate creek walking. The seasonal campers were very friendly and welcoming to weekend visitors.
