Trail description

Description

Gertrude's Nose is one of the most rewarding hikes in the Hudson Valley — a loop trail that takes you through dense forest, across open rocky ledges, and out to a dramatic cliff-edge promontory with sweeping views over the Wallkill Valley and the surrounding Shawangunk Ridge. It's the kind of trail that earns its reputation honestly.

The trail is located within Minnewaska State Park Preserve, a protected area managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The preserve sits on the Shawangunk Ridge, a distinctive geological formation known for its white conglomerate bedrock, sky lakes, and pitch pine barrens — a landscape unlike anything else in the region.

The Terrain

The route to Gertrude's Nose follows a combination of carriage roads and footpaths through varied terrain. You'll start on wide, well-maintained carriage roads before transitioning onto narrower footpaths that wind through pitch pine and oak forest. The trail eventually opens up onto exposed bedrock ledges — the signature feature of this hike.

The Shawangunk conglomerate rock underfoot is hard, white, and often slick when wet. Hikers should expect uneven footing across open slabs, some scrambling near the nose itself, and sections where the trail hugs close to cliff edges. The exposure is real — this isn't a trail where you want to be distracted or rushing.

The namesake promontory, Gertrude's Nose, juts out from the ridge like a rocky peninsula above the valley. Standing at the tip, you're surrounded on three sides by open air, with views stretching far across the lowlands to the west. It's a genuinely dramatic spot, and it's the clear highlight of the loop.

What to Expect on the Trail

The loop passes through several distinct environments. Dense forest sections alternate with open rocky barrens where pitch pines grow in twisted, wind-shaped forms. The understory in forested sections often includes mountain laurel, which blooms in late spring and early summer. The open ledges offer constant visual interest — you're rarely walking blind through thick woods for long stretches.

There are multiple viewpoints along the ridge before and after the nose itself, so the payoff isn't limited to a single spot. The trail rewards hikers who take their time and explore the edges of the ledges rather than rushing through.

The loop can be done in either direction. Many hikers prefer to reach Gertrude's Nose earlier in the route to enjoy the views before fatigue sets in, but both directions are well-marked and manageable.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Gertrude's Nose Trail sits within a larger network of trails and carriage roads at Minnewaska. The preserve is known for its sky lakes — Lake Minnewaska and Lake Awosting — which are perched high on the ridge and fed by rainwater rather than streams, giving them their characteristic clarity and slightly acidic chemistry. While the Gertrude's Nose loop doesn't pass directly by these lakes, they're accessible from the same trail network and worth combining into a longer day if you have the energy.

The preserve charges a vehicle entrance fee, which varies by season. Parking at the main Minnewaska lot fills up quickly on weekends and holidays, especially in fall foliage season and late spring. Arriving early — before 9 a.m. on busy days — is strongly recommended. When the main lot is full, the park closes entry to additional vehicles.

Dogs and Bikes

Dogs are permitted on leash on the carriage roads within Minnewaska State Park Preserve, but they are not permitted on the footpaths, which includes the Gertrude's Nose footpath section of this loop. If you're planning to bring a dog, check the current trail designations at the park entrance or on the official preserve map before heading out — the rules are enforced.

Bikes are permitted on the carriage roads but not on the footpaths. The Gertrude's Nose loop uses both, so cyclists will need to stick to the carriage road portions of the network.

Practical Information

  • Managed by: New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
  • Entrance fee: Vehicle fee applies; check current rates with the park
  • Dogs: Not permitted on the Gertrude's Nose footpath; leashed dogs allowed on carriage roads only
  • Bikes: Carriage roads only; not permitted on footpaths
  • Parking: Main Minnewaska lot; arrives early on weekends and peak season days
  • Footing: Exposed conglomerate bedrock, can be slippery when wet — traction footwear recommended
  • Exposure: Cliff edges near the nose; not recommended for those uncomfortable with heights

When to Go

The trail is accessible for most of the year, though conditions vary significantly by season. Spring brings mountain laurel blooms and green-up in the forest. Fall foliage on the Shawangunk Ridge is exceptional, and the open ledges on this trail give you elevated views of the color spread across the valley — it's one of the best vantage points in the region during peak fall. Winter hiking is possible but the exposed rock becomes significantly more hazardous with ice; microspikes are essential in those conditions.

Summer weekends are the busiest period. The combination of the preserve's popularity and limited parking means that late arrivals on a July or August Saturday may find themselves turned away at the gate.

What Makes This Trail Stand Out

A lot of Hudson Valley hikes offer good forest walking with occasional views. Gertrude's Nose delivers something more specific: a sustained ridge experience with genuine exposure, distinctive geology, and a destination that actually feels like a destination. The Shawangunk conglomerate landscape is visually striking in a way that's hard to replicate elsewhere in the Northeast — the white rock, the pitch pine silhouettes, the sky opening up over the valley. This trail puts you in the middle of all of it.

It's a trail that experienced hikers return to repeatedly, and one that makes a strong impression on people visiting the Shawangunks for the first time.

Perfect spot for photography with incredible vistas from the cliff edge. The trail winds through beautiful Hudson Valley terrain with varied landscapes. While there are entrance and parking fees, the experience justifies the cost. Allow the full 4-5 hours to explore properly and capture the best shots. The rocky outcrops provide excellent foreground elements for landscape photography.
