Description
Mohonk Mountain House is one of the Hudson Valley's most distinctive hiking destinations — a place where a Victorian-era resort and genuine wilderness exist side by side on the Shawangunk Ridge. Located in New Paltz, New York, the property has been owned and operated by the Smiley family since 1869, now in its eighth and ninth generations. That continuity shows in how the land has been cared for: over 1,200 acres of protected terrain laced with historic carriage roads and footpaths, all centered on a glacial lake beneath dramatic white conglomerate cliffs.
What sets Mohonk apart from other Hudson Valley hikes isn't just the scenery — it's the combination of well-preserved 19th-century infrastructure and genuinely rugged Shawangunk geology. The castle-like resort building rises directly from the eastern shore of Mohonk Lake, making it one of the more surreal backdrops you'll find on any hike in the region.
The Trail Network
The hiking here covers 8.5 km with 360 meters of elevation gain, rated moderate, with most visitors needing around 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete a solid loop through the area's highlights. That said, the trail network is extensive enough that you could easily spend a full day exploring without retracing your steps.
The carriage roads form the backbone of the system. These wide, graded paths date back to the 19th century and connect the major viewpoints and landmarks across the property. They're well-maintained and accessible to a broad range of fitness levels, making them a good starting point before branching onto the narrower footpaths. Those side trails are where the terrain gets more interesting — scrambling over exposed Shawangunk conglomerate slabs, pushing through dense mountain laurel thickets, and picking your way along cliff edges with open views across the valley.
The white conglomerate rock that defines the Shawangunk Ridge creates a landscape unlike anything else in the Hudson Valley. Cliff faces, hidden caves, and broad rock ledges appear throughout the trail network, and the geology rewards hikers who take time to explore beyond the main carriage roads.
Key Landmarks
Mohonk Lake stretches half a mile through a natural valley at the heart of the property. Multiple trails circle the lake, offering constantly shifting views of the water, the surrounding cliffs, and the resort building itself. The lake's glacial origins are visible in its depth and in the smooth, rounded rock formations along its shores.
Sky Top Tower, a stone observation tower constructed in 1921, marks the highest accessible point on the property. The climb involves steady elevation gain through mixed hardwood forest before breaking out onto the exposed summit. From the top, the views are genuinely expansive — the Catskill Mountains to the west, and the Hudson River valley stretching north and south. It's a natural destination for anyone doing a longer loop through the area.
The Labyrinth is a geological formation of house-sized boulders with narrow passages running between them. Hikers scramble through tight gaps, emerge onto unexpected viewpoints, and discover hidden chambers within the rock maze. It's a highlight for families with kids, but adults find it just as engaging — the scale of the boulders and the disorienting nature of the passages make it feel like a completely different kind of hiking experience.
Seasonal Conditions
Spring brings mountain laurel blooms along many of the trails, creating tunnel-like passages of white and pink flowers — one of the more memorable visual experiences the property offers. Summer delivers the fullest forest canopy and the warmest conditions for lakeside time, though it also brings the heaviest visitor traffic. Fall is peak season for good reason: sugar maples, oaks, and birches turn against the white cliff faces in a combination that's hard to match anywhere in the region.
Winter hiking is quieter and, for those prepared for it, genuinely rewarding. The bare trees open up views that stay hidden during leafy months, and snow and ice formations on the cliffs and around the lake add a stark visual quality to the landscape.
Access and Practical Information
Mohonk Mountain House operates as a private resort, so access to the trail network requires either an overnight stay at the hotel or the purchase of a day visitor pass. This arrangement keeps the trails from being overwhelmed and funds the ongoing conservation work that has protected the property for over 150 years. Facilities — restrooms, water, trail maps — are well-maintained and distributed throughout the property, which is a genuine advantage over many comparable hiking areas.
The property is located in New Paltz, making it a practical day trip from the New York metropolitan area and a natural stop for anyone exploring the Hudson Valley by car.
