Description
Hempstead Lake State Park is a 737-acre state park tucked into Nassau County on Long Island, making it one of the more accessible green escapes for anyone coming out of the New York metro area. Located in West Hempstead, it's one of three state parks within the Town of Hempstead, and you can reach it quickly via Exit 18 off the Southern State Parkway — which, as it turns out, was built right over the old aqueduct that once carried water from this area all the way to the Brooklyn Waterworks. That bit of history is easy to miss, but it adds a layer to what feels like a pretty straightforward suburban park.
The Trail
The hiking loop here covers about 6 km with only 20 meters of elevation gain, which puts it firmly in the easy category. Plan on roughly 1 hour 30 minutes to complete it at a relaxed pace. The terrain is flat and forgiving — this isn't a place you come to for a workout, but rather for a genuinely pleasant walk through wooded areas and along the water. The paths wind past three ponds and through shaded picnic groves, so there's always something to look at without the trail ever demanding much from your legs.
The park also maintains a bridle path and biking routes, so on busier days you'll share the space with cyclists and the occasional horse. Keep that in mind when choosing where to walk — the wooded sections tend to be quieter and more sheltered.
What You'll Find Along the Way
The three ponds are the real centerpiece of the park. They're stocked with several varieties of fish, which draws a steady crowd of anglers year-round — including ice fishers in winter when conditions allow. If you're just hiking, the ponds still make for good stopping points, especially on a calm morning when the water is still.
The wooded picnic areas provide solid shade throughout the warmer months, and the tree cover makes the trail noticeably cooler than the surrounding neighborhoods. The park also has tennis courts, playing fields, a playground, and pavilions, so it functions as a full community park — don't be surprised to find families, dog walkers, and sports groups all sharing the space on weekends.
Seasons and Conditions
Hempstead Lake State Park is a four-season destination. In winter, the park supports cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice skating when the weather cooperates. Spring and fall are probably the best times to hike — the crowds are lighter and the wooded sections look their best. Summer works too, especially early in the morning before the picnic areas fill up.
Getting There
Access is straightforward: take Exit 18 off the Southern State Parkway for the quickest entry into the park. Parking is available on-site. The park's location in West Hempstead means it's well within reach for day-trippers from across Long Island and the broader New York area.
Good to Know
- The trail is easy and suitable for most fitness levels, including families with kids.
- The park offers far more than hiking — fishing, biking, tennis, and seasonal activities make it a full day out if you want it to be.
- Three stocked ponds mean fishing is a legitimate draw, not just a side note.
- A boat launch is available for those who want to get out on the water.
- The Southern State Parkway runs directly over the historic aqueduct that once supplied water to Brooklyn — a small but interesting piece of Long Island history embedded right in the park's geography.
