Trail description

Trail Details

The main trail is a 2.4 km easy loop around the lake perimeter with only 15 meters of elevation gain, making it ideal for families and casual walkers. The route combines paved and unpaved sections, taking you through forest and along the sandy beach on the northern shore of Lake Ronkonkoma. The terrain is flat and accessible throughout.

The trail begins from the parking area off Lake Shore Road and is well-maintained by Suffolk County Parks. On-site facilities include playgrounds, picnic areas, and sports courts operated by SYAG Sports (Spend Your Active Generation).

The Lake and Its Geology

Lake Ronkonkoma is a glacially-formed kettle lake with a circumference of approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) and an average width of 0.65 miles (1.05 km). The lake's notably round shape and depth are characteristic of kettle lake geology, formed by retreating glaciers during the last ice age. The surrounding landscape reflects this glacial origin with gently rolling terrain, sandy soils, and mixed vegetation typical of Long Island's interior.

Local History and Culture

The lake takes its name from the Ronkonkoma people, the Indigenous group of the area, and holds significance in local lore and community heritage. The lake has served as a gathering place for generations of Long Island residents and remains central to the area's identity.

Who This Trail Works For

  • Families with young children — flat terrain, short distance, facilities, and open spaces make this an easy family outing.
  • Casual walkers and seniors — low elevation gain and accessible surface throughout.
  • Those seeking accessible waterfront scenery — close views of the lake with minimal physical demands.
  • Local residents — a neighborhood park ideal for regular visits and quick outings.

Practical Information

Located in Lake Ronkonkoma hamlet, Town of Islip, Suffolk County. Free parking is available on-site. The park can be busy on weekends and during SYAG Sports events; weekday mornings typically offer a quieter experience. Check Suffolk County Parks for current conditions and seasonal programming before your visit.

Large park offering various activities from fishing to kayaking on the lake. The sandy beach area is inviting despite no swimming policy due to water quality concerns. Sports facilities include tennis courts, baseball diamond, and basketball hoops. Some equipment shows wear from heavy use but overall maintained well. Entry fees and parking charges can add up for frequent visitors.

Impressive freshwater lake setting with approximately two miles of shoreline to explore. The park offers good accessibility for non-residents during busy season when other local beaches restrict access. Fishing spots are well-designated and the recently repaired boat launch accommodates kayaking enthusiasts. The combination of natural beauty and recreational amenities makes this a worthwhile destination despite modest entrance fees.
