Trail description

Description

Pebble Beach is a short and scenic hiking destination tucked into the Thompson Okanagan region of British Columbia. At just 1.5 km with about 200 m of elevation gain, it's rated easy and typically takes around 45 minutes to complete — making it a solid option for families, casual hikers, or anyone looking for a rewarding outing without committing to a full-day adventure.

The Trail

The route is compact but delivers a genuine sense of place. The 1.5 km distance keeps things accessible, while the 200 m of elevation change gives the hike just enough movement to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. The terrain is manageable for most fitness levels, and the relatively short duration means you can fit it into a morning or afternoon without rearranging your whole day.

The name says it all — the destination is a beach characterized by smooth, rounded pebbles rather than sand, which is a distinctive feature in this part of British Columbia's interior. The Thompson Okanagan is better known for its semi-arid landscapes, rolling hills, and lake-dotted valleys, so a pebble beach in this setting has a particular charm that sets it apart from the region's more typical terrain.

What to Expect

Because this is an easy-rated trail with a modest distance, the path itself shouldn't present major technical challenges. The elevation gain of 200 m suggests there's some climbing involved — likely on the approach — before the trail opens up to the beach itself. Footing on pebble surfaces can be slightly uneven, so a pair of trail shoes or sturdy sneakers is a reasonable choice over sandals or flat-soled footwear.

The Thompson Okanagan's landscape tends to shift between open, sun-exposed slopes and pockets of shade depending on aspect and elevation. Depending on the time of year, you may be hiking through dry grassland, shrubby terrain, or light forest cover before reaching the water's edge. The pebble beach itself offers a natural spot to pause, take in the surroundings, and enjoy the view before heading back.

Practical Information

  • Distance: 1.5 km
  • Elevation gain: 200 m
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Estimated time: 45 minutes
  • Region: Thompson Okanagan, British Columbia

Given the short distance and easy rating, this trail works well as a standalone outing or as a warm-up before exploring other trails in the area. The Thompson Okanagan has no shortage of hiking options across a wide range of difficulty levels, so Pebble Beach fits naturally into a broader day of outdoor exploration in the region.

Tips Before You Go

The Thompson Okanagan is one of the warmest and driest regions in Canada, and summer temperatures can climb quickly. Even on a short trail like this one, bringing water is a smart move. Sun protection — a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses — is worth packing, especially if the trail runs through exposed terrain with limited shade.

Footwear with some grip will serve you better than flat-soled shoes, particularly on the pebble surface at the destination. If you're visiting with kids or less experienced hikers, the easy rating and short distance make this a low-pressure introduction to trail hiking in British Columbia's interior.

Check local conditions before heading out, as trail access and surface conditions in the Thompson Okanagan can vary depending on the season and recent weather.

Absolutely love this place! The crystal-clear water is perfect for swimming, and the long narrow beach provides plenty of space to spread out. Evening sun exposure is excellent for those sunset moments. While the water takes time to deepen and the rocky bottom requires careful footing, the overall experience is fantastic. We've become regular visitors and always enjoy our time here.

This charming pebble beach offers a relaxing family-friendly atmosphere with crystal-clear water perfect for swimming. The rocky shoreline requires water shoes, but the accessible docks provide excellent jumping spots for children. Parking can be tight during peak hours, and only portable facilities are available, but the peaceful setting and easy access from Highway 31 make it worth the visit.

This beautiful lakeside spot offers a wonderful family experience with its clean waters and peaceful atmosphere. The rocky bottom can be a bit slippery when entering the water, but the clarity and cleanliness make up for it. The jumping dock is a huge hit with kids, and the relaxed vibe makes it perfect for spending quality time together. Limited parking can be challenging during peak times, but we usually manage to find a spot.

Fantastic little beach that's ideal for families seeking a quiet escape from busy tourist areas. The kids had an absolute blast jumping off the floating platforms and dock for hours. The setting is incredibly peaceful and safe, making it easy for parents to relax while children play. The natural beauty of the surrounding area really adds to the overall experience of this hidden gem.
