Trail description
Description
Mundy Park is the largest park in Coquitlam, British Columbia, covering 176 hectares (435 acres) of forested land right in the heart of the city. It's the kind of place where you can genuinely lose yourself in the trees for a while, even though you're surrounded by suburbs. The trail network here is accessible, well-used, and a solid option for anyone looking for a quick nature fix in the Vancouver Coast Mountains region.
The Trail
The main loop through Mundy Park runs approximately 2.5 km with only about 40 metres of elevation gain, making it an easy outing suitable for all fitness levels. You're looking at roughly 45 minutes to complete the loop at a relaxed pace. The terrain is mostly flat with gentle, rolling sections through second-growth forest — nothing technical, nothing that requires special footwear, though trail runners or hiking shoes are always a good call when the ground is wet.
The trails wind through the forested interior of the park and pass by the park's two lakes: Mundy Lake and Lost Lake. Both lakes are highlights of the route and worth slowing down for. The surrounding forest provides a genuine sense of being away from it all, even on a short outing.
Wildlife and Nature
Mundy Park supports a surprisingly diverse range of wildlife for an urban park. Black bears, deer, and raccoons have all been spotted here, so it's worth keeping your eyes open and your food secured. The lakes attract ducks, geese, and swans, and the broader park is home to a wide variety of bird species, making it a decent spot for casual birdwatching. The park also contains some endangered plant species, which is a good reminder to stay on the marked trails and tread lightly.
Park Facilities
Beyond the trails, Mundy Park is a full-service community park with a lot going on. You'll find an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a playground, picnic areas, a disc golf area, and a lacrosse box. There are also sports fields on site — the Coquitlam Reds of the B.C. Premier Baseball League play their home games here. In winter, the park sees cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow.
If you've ever seen the 2006 film Deck the Halls starring Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick, some of those scenes were actually shot right here at Mundy Park.
Who It's For
This is a great option for families with young kids, older adults, or anyone who wants a peaceful walk without committing to a full-day adventure. The low elevation gain and short distance make it approachable for beginners, and the lake views and wildlife sightings give it enough character to keep things interesting. It's also a popular spot for trail runners and cyclists who use the wider path network throughout the park.
Getting There
Mundy Park is located in Coquitlam, British Columbia, and is easily accessible by car with parking available on site. The park is well-signed within the city and straightforward to find.
