Trail description

Practical Considerations

Alaska's Interior has a climate that demands respect. Summers are warm — genuinely warm, sometimes hot — but weather can shift quickly. Mosquitoes and other biting insects are a serious factor from late May through July. A head net is not optional; it's essential gear. Long sleeves and pants help. Insect repellent with DEET is worth carrying even if you prefer to avoid it — the alternative is worse.

Water is available from the river and its tributaries, but treat everything before drinking. Giardia is present in Alaskan waterways. A filter, UV pen, or chemical treatment should be in your kit.

Footing along the river can be unstable. Gravel bars shift, banks undercut, and wet rocks are slippery. Trekking poles are genuinely useful here, both for balance on uneven terrain and for probing river crossings if you need to wade.
