Trail description
Description
The Beehive is one of the most iconic — and most demanding — short hikes in Acadia National Park. Sitting above Sand Beach on the eastern side of Mount Desert Island, this compact trail packs a serious punch into just 2.4 km, with 146 meters of elevation gain and sections that feel more like rock climbing than hiking. Plan on about 1 hour 45 minutes to complete the loop, and don't underestimate it: the Hard difficulty rating is well earned.
The Trail Experience
The Beehive Loop is famous for its iron rungs and ladders bolted directly into the granite face. These fixed metal handholds are not decorative — you will use them to haul yourself up near-vertical rock walls, squeeze through narrow ledges, and navigate exposed traverses with significant drop-offs below. If you're comfortable with heights and have solid footwear with good grip, it's an exhilarating climb. If you're not a fan of exposure, this one will test you.
The trail is typically hiked as a one-way loop: up the Beehive Trail on the steep, ladder-assisted face, then back down via the Bowl Trail, which descends more gradually through the woods to the trailhead near Sand Beach. The descent route is far less technical and gives your legs and nerves a chance to recover before you're back at the parking area.
The rock is predominantly pink granite — the same Acadia granite you'll find across the park — and it offers decent friction when dry. Wet conditions change the equation entirely. Wet granite and iron rungs are slippery, and several sections become genuinely dangerous after rain. Check the forecast before you go, and if it's been raining recently, consider saving this one for a drier day.
What You'll See at the Top
The summit of The Beehive sits at a modest elevation, but the views punch well above their weight. From the top, you get a sweeping look over Sand Beach and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, with the Beehive's rounded granite dome framing the scene. On a clear day, you can see across Frenchman Bay toward the Schoodic Peninsula. The Bowl — a small glacially carved pond — sits just below the summit and is visible from several points along the upper trail. It's a striking landscape that captures everything that makes Acadia feel different from other parks in the Northeast.
Practical Information
The trailhead is located near the Sand Beach parking area off Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park. Parking here fills up fast, especially in summer — arriving early in the morning is strongly recommended. The park operates a free Island Explorer shuttle bus that stops at Sand Beach, which is a solid alternative to driving and dealing with the parking situation.
An Acadia National Park entrance fee is required. The park uses a timed-entry reservation system for the Sand Beach corridor during peak season, so check the current requirements on the National Park Service website before your visit.

Who This Trail Is For
The Beehive is best suited for hikers who are comfortable with exposure and have some experience on technical terrain. The iron rung sections require upper body engagement and a steady head for heights — this is not a trail for young children, anyone with a fear of heights, or hikers in casual footwear. Dogs are not permitted on The Beehive Trail due to the ladder sections. Poles are more of a hindrance than a help here; most people stow them or leave them behind for the ascent.
For those who want the Acadia granite experience without the vertical exposure, the nearby Gorham Mountain Trail offers a more accessible alternative with similarly rewarding coastal views.
When to Go
The trail is accessible from spring through late fall, though early spring can bring icy conditions on the upper ledges. Midsummer weekends see the highest crowds — the combination of Sand Beach and The Beehive draws a lot of visitors. Weekday mornings in September and early October offer some of the best conditions: cooler temperatures, fewer people, and the beginning of fall color in the surrounding forest.
Whatever time of year you visit, dry weather is non-negotiable for a safe and enjoyable experience on The Beehive's exposed granite faces.
