Fantastic trail system with recent improvements around the Appalachian Trail section. The terrain is manageable with moderate elevation changes perfect for extended hiking. Pollywog Gorge is a must-see destination. Remember that dogs aren't permitted and parking fees apply, so plan accordingly for this remarkable Maine Highlands experience.

Beautiful area but extremely buggy during summer months. The trail was easy to hike with minimal rocky or rooty sections, though some areas were overgrown. Great for fishing on the numerous ponds, but camping sites are somewhat limited. The peace and quiet of this vast reserve is its greatest appeal for those seeking true wilderness.

Challenging terrain with heavy brush and rocky sections in places. The northern loop following Nahmakanta Lake was beautiful, but the southern sections were quite overgrown and difficult to navigate. Sturdy hiking boots are essential. Limited camping options compared to other areas, though the remote setting offers unmatched peace.

Absolutely stunning wilderness area with incredible solitude - saw only three other people during our five-day backpacking trip. The primitive campsites are well-maintained with good trail markings. Access via logging roads requires careful attention, but the investment in time and fees is completely worth it for this hidden gem.

Incredible wilderness experience in this massive 43,000-acre reserve. The trail system was well-marked with cairns, though some sections were overgrown. Access fees through the North Woods checkpoint add up, but the solitude and pristine ponds make it worthwhile. Saw abundant wildlife including moose and deer during our multi-day trek.
