Trail description

Description

South Brother is one of those peaks in the Maine Highlands that doesn't get the same attention as its more famous neighbors, but it earns every bit of respect from the hikers who make the trip. At 11.3 km with 914 m of elevation gain, this is a full day out — plan for around 6 hours and 30 minutes on the trail, and don't underestimate it. The difficulty rating is Hard, and that's accurate.

What to Expect on the Trail

South Brother sits in the Baxter State Park area of Maine, part of a rugged landscape shaped by glacial activity and dense boreal forest. The terrain is classic Maine backcountry: rocky, rooted, and uneven underfoot. The trail climbs steadily, with sections that require hands-on scrambling as you gain elevation. This isn't a casual stroll — you'll be working for the views.

The forest cover transitions as you climb. Lower sections move through mixed hardwood and softwood forest typical of the Maine Highlands, while higher up the trees thin out and the landscape opens into subalpine terrain. The upper sections of the trail offer exposed ridgeline walking where the wind can pick up significantly, especially in shoulder seasons.

With nearly 914 meters of vertical gain packed into the route, your legs will feel the cumulative effort on the descent. Trekking poles are a smart call here, particularly on the way back down when the rocky footing demands attention.

The Views and the Payoff

The summit of South Brother rewards the effort with open views across the surrounding wilderness. From the top, you're looking out over a landscape that feels genuinely remote — forested ridges, wetlands, and the kind of unbroken wild terrain that defines this corner of Maine. On a clear day, the panorama is expansive and worth every step of the climb.

South Brother is part of a group of peaks in the Baxter State Park region, and experienced hikers sometimes combine it with neighboring summits for a longer outing. That said, South Brother on its own is already a substantial day hike — most people will be satisfied with the peak itself.

Practical Information

Given the 6.5-hour estimated time on trail, an early start is strongly recommended. Baxter State Park operates with specific entry and reservation requirements, so check current park policies before your visit — parking and access can be limited, especially during peak summer and fall foliage seasons.

Come prepared for variable weather. The Maine Highlands can see rapid weather changes at elevation, and the exposed upper sections of South Brother offer no shelter. Bring layers, rain gear, and more water than you think you'll need. The trail is not a place to be caught underprepared.

Who This Hike Is For

South Brother is best suited for hikers who are already comfortable with sustained elevation gain, rocky technical terrain, and longer days on trail. If you've done a handful of hard hikes in the Northeast and you're looking for something that genuinely challenges you in a wild, remote setting, this one delivers. First-timers or casual day hikers would be better served starting with something shorter and less demanding before taking this one on.

Wear sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, carry a map (cell service is unreliable in this area), and let someone know your plans before heading out into this stretch of the Maine backcountry.
