Trail description

Description

South Brother is one of those peaks in the Maine Highlands that doesn't get as much attention as its neighbors, but it earns every bit of respect from the hikers who make the trip. At 11.3 km with 914 m of elevation gain and an estimated time of around 6 hours 30 minutes, this is a full day out — rated Hard, and that rating is honest.

What to Expect on the Trail

South Brother sits in the Baxter State Park region of Maine, part of a rugged landscape shaped by glaciers and defined by exposed ridgelines, dense boreal forest, and rocky terrain that demands your full attention. The trail to South Brother is not a casual walk — the elevation gain is sustained and the footing can be technical in sections, especially as you gain altitude and the trail transitions from forest floor to open rock.

The approach takes you through classic Maine north woods: spruce and fir forest, with the smell of damp moss and the sound of wind picking up as you climb. The trail is well-defined but not manicured — expect roots, rocks, and the occasional wet section depending on recent weather. Trekking poles are genuinely useful here, both on the ascent and on the descent when your legs are starting to feel the day.

As you gain elevation, the trees thin out and the views begin to open up. South Brother's summit offers a real payoff — wide open perspectives across the Maine Highlands, with the surrounding peaks and wilderness stretching out in every direction. This is remote, quiet country, and on a clear day the summit feels like the top of the world in the best possible way.

Difficulty and Fitness Level

This trail is rated Hard for good reason. The combination of distance — 11.3 km round trip — and nearly 914 m of vertical gain puts it firmly in the category of a challenging mountain hike. You should be comfortable with sustained climbs, uneven terrain, and spending a full day on the trail before attempting South Brother.

Plan for the full 6 hours 30 minutes estimated time, and don't rush it. Factor in breaks, time on the summit, and the reality that descents on rocky terrain take longer than people expect. Start early, especially in summer when afternoon thunderstorms can roll in quickly over the highlands.

Gear and Preparation

Because of the remote nature of this hike and the exposed summit, preparation matters more here than on shorter, lower-elevation trails. A few things worth keeping in mind:

  • Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots with solid ankle support are strongly recommended. The terrain is rocky and can be wet.
  • Water: Carry more than you think you need. There may be water sources along the trail, but treat any backcountry water before drinking.
  • Layers: Summit temperatures can be significantly cooler than the trailhead, and wind exposure is real once you're above treeline. Pack a wind layer at minimum.
  • Navigation: A map and compass (or downloaded offline map) are worth having. Cell service in this area of Maine is unreliable.
  • Food: A 6.5-hour hike burns a lot of energy. Pack a real lunch and extra snacks.

The Setting: Maine Highlands

The Maine Highlands region is one of the most genuinely wild corners of the northeastern United States. It's a landscape of big forests, cold lakes, and mountains that feel far removed from the populated coast. South Brother fits right into that character — this isn't a trail that's been softened for casual visitors. It rewards hikers who come prepared and who appreciate the kind of quiet, hard-earned summit that defines the best of Maine's backcountry.

Wildlife is part of the experience in this region. Moose are common in the boreal forest zones, and birds like white-throated sparrows and various warblers are active through the warmer months. Keep your eyes open and your noise level reasonable, especially in the early morning hours when wildlife activity peaks.

Access and Logistics

South Brother is located within the Maine Highlands, and access is tied to the road network serving this remote part of the state. Check current trail and road conditions before heading out — seasonal closures and gate schedules can affect access, particularly in spring and late fall. If you're visiting Baxter State Park or the surrounding area, confirm entry requirements, reservation policies, and any applicable fees in advance, as these can change seasonally.

Arrive early. Parking at trailheads in this region fills up on busy summer weekends, and starting your hike by 7 or 8 a.m. gives you the best chance of a clear summit and a comfortable return before afternoon weather develops.

South Brother is the kind of hike that sticks with you — a genuine mountain day in one of Maine's most spectacular and least-crowded wilderness areas.

Beautiful trail with stunning views of the Maine Highlands! The 15.4km hike with 1210m elevation gain is definitely challenging but absolutely worth it. The scenery throughout the moderate difficulty trail is breathtaking, especially as you climb higher. Plan for 4-6 hours and bring plenty of water since there are no services available on the trail.
