Description
Shepherd Lake Recreation Area sits within the sprawling boundaries of Ringwood State Park in New Jersey's Highlands Region, offering a genuinely rewarding outdoor experience just about an hour from New York City. The centerpiece here is a pristine 74-acre lake ringed by dense hardwood forest and gentle rolling hills — a combination that makes this spot feel far more remote than it actually is.
The landscape carries the unmistakable signature of glacial history. Ancient ice sheets carved out the lake basin and left behind the granite outcroppings and boulder fields that define the Highlands Region's character. As you move through the trail network, you'll notice how the geology shifts underfoot — from smooth packed earth near the shoreline to rockier, root-laced terrain as the trail climbs into the surrounding hills.
The Hike
The trail system here covers approximately 3.2 kilometers with around 70 meters of elevation gain, making it a solid easy outing that most hikers can complete in about an hour and fifteen minutes at a comfortable pace. That said, the area rewards those who slow down — there's enough variety in the terrain and scenery to justify lingering.
The route weaves through mature oak and maple forest, dips close to the shoreline in several spots, and climbs moderate grades into the surrounding hills. The lakeside sections are the most relaxed walking, with flat, well-packed trail and open views across the water. As you gain elevation, the trail gets more technical — roots, rocks, and the occasional muddy stretch after rain — but nothing that requires scrambling or advanced footwear. A solid pair of hiking boots is the right call, especially in shoulder seasons.
Trail markings are clear and consistent, so navigation is straightforward even if you're visiting for the first time. The interconnected paths allow for some flexibility in how you piece together your route, which is useful if you want to extend the outing or cut it short depending on conditions.
Wildlife and Natural Setting
White-tailed deer are a regular presence, particularly in the early morning and at dusk when they move through the forest edges. The lake draws a solid variety of bird life — woodpeckers work through the hardwoods year-round, hawks patrol the ridgelines, and seasonal waterfowl use the lake as a stopover during migration. The 74-acre lake itself is large enough to feel like a genuine wilderness feature rather than a pond, and its protected position within the hills keeps it calm and reflective on most days.
Beyond the Trail
Shepherd Lake is an active recreation destination, not just a scenic backdrop. The calm, sheltered water is well-suited for kayaking and canoeing, with access points around the shoreline for launching watercraft. Wind is rarely a factor given the lake's position, which makes it approachable for paddlers at any skill level. Fishing is also productive here — the lake's varied depth and structure support multiple species, and you can cast from shore or from a small boat.
Designated picnic areas with tables and grills are positioned to take advantage of lake views and shade, making this a natural choice for a family day where some people want to hike while others prefer to stay near the water. The facilities are maintained as part of the broader Ringwood State Park system, so upkeep is generally reliable.
Seasonal Highlights
Fall is the standout season at Shepherd Lake. The surrounding hardwood forest — heavy on oak and maple — puts on a vivid display of reds, oranges, and yellows, and the lake doubles the effect by mirroring the canopy. Expect more company on the trails during peak foliage weekends. Summer is ideal for combining hiking with a swim or a paddle, and the forest canopy provides meaningful shade on hot days. Spring brings wildflowers to the forest floor and migrating birds to the lake, though trail conditions can be soft and muddy during snowmelt — waterproof footwear earns its keep this time of year. Winter hiking is viable when conditions allow, and the bare trees open up views of the lake and rock formations that stay hidden during the growing season.
Getting There and Planning Your Visit
Parking is available near the main access points within the recreation area. During summer weekends and peak fall foliage season, the lot fills up earlier than you'd expect — arriving by mid-morning is a reasonable strategy. The area is part of Ringwood State Park, so it's worth checking current park conditions and any seasonal access updates before heading out.
If you want to extend your day beyond the recreation area itself, Ringwood Manor and Skylands Manor are both nearby and offer a look into the region's industrial and cultural history — a worthwhile addition to a full day in the Highlands.
