Description
Grass Mountain is a peak in Bennington County, in the heart of Southern Vermont. It sits within a classic Green Mountain landscape, flanked to the north by Big Spruce Mountain and to the southeast by Spruce Mountain. The terrain here is shaped by the watershed of the Hudson River — every stream and drainage on this mountain eventually finds its way south and west into New York Bay, flowing through Batten Kill, the Walloomsac River, the Hoosic River, and their tributaries depending on which slope you're standing on.
The Trail
This out-and-back hike covers 12.2 km total with 648 m of elevation gain. It is considered a challenging route that attracts experienced hikers seeking a rewarding wilderness experience. The trail moves upward consistently, requiring sustained effort and stamina.
The surrounding terrain is typical of this part of Vermont: dense mixed forest, rocky footing in sections, and the kind of quiet that comes from being well away from major roads. The summit area features a small grassy clearing with no expansive views, though a short bushwhack leads to the true high point. The watershed geography means you'll cross or hear small streams on multiple sides of the mountain depending on your route, each one draining into a different river system below.
Location and Access
Grass Mountain is located near North Bennington, Bennington County, in Southern Vermont. The area sits within the broader Green Mountain National Forest region. This trail is unlikely to be crowded, making it ideal for hikers seeking solitude. Access details and trailhead parking should be confirmed locally before heading out, as conditions can vary by season.

The Surrounding Area
One of the more interesting aspects of Grass Mountain's geography is how its four slopes drain into entirely separate river systems before all eventually converging in the Hudson. The north side feeds Batten Kill directly; the east side drains into Dry Brook, which also reaches Batten Kill; the south side flows into Little White Creek and then the Walloomsac and Hoosic rivers; and the west side drains into White Creek, Owl Kill, and the Hoosic. It's a small detail, but it gives you a sense of how this peak sits at a genuine hydrological crossroads in the region.
The Green Mountains backdrop means the forest character is consistent with what Southern Vermont is known for — a landscape that rewards hikers who take their time and pay attention to the details of the terrain rather than rushing to a summit and back.
