Description
South Glenmore Park lines the southern shores of the Glenmore Reservoir in Calgary, giving you a genuine outdoor escape without ever leaving the city. It's not a Rocky Mountain destination — but on a clear day, the peaks to the west frame the reservoir in a way that makes the whole place feel bigger than it is. For a quick trail fix close to home, it's hard to beat.
The Trails
The park runs about 3.2 km of trail with only around 50 metres of elevation gain, so you're looking at a relaxed one-hour outing. That makes it solidly in easy territory — a good call for families, casual walkers, or anyone who just wants to move their legs without committing to a full-day adventure.
Two types of trails share the park. The paved pathways hug the reservoir's edge, staying flat and smooth the whole way. They're stroller-friendly, easy to navigate, and give you consistent water views throughout. If you want something a bit more textured, the unpaved hiking trails branch away from the shoreline into patches of forest and open meadow. The tree cover is welcome on hot summer afternoons, and the meadow sections open up to wide views of both the reservoir and the mountains beyond. The terrain rolls gently — enough variety to keep things interesting, not enough to wind you.
The contrast between the wooded sections and the open areas is one of the things that makes the park feel more dynamic than a typical urban trail. One minute you're in the shade of a forest canopy, the next you're standing in a clearing with an unobstructed view of the Rockies. For a 3.2 km loop, it punches above its weight.
Wildlife
The park supports more wildlife than you'd expect given its location inside Calgary. Deer are a regular sight, especially in the early morning and evening when they come out to graze in the open meadows. It's worth keeping your eyes open — these encounters happen often enough that they don't feel like a lucky break.
Coyotes are around too, though less predictable. They tend to show up during quieter periods when foot traffic is low. Keep dogs leashed and stay aware of your surroundings, particularly if you're out early or late in the day.
Birdwatchers get a solid deal here. The reservoir draws waterfowl year-round, and bald eagles are known to hunt over the water — if you catch one diving, it's a memorable moment. The forested sections and meadows add songbird variety, so the soundscape shifts as you move through different parts of the park.
On the Water
The Glenmore Reservoir isn't just a backdrop — it's usable. Kayaking and canoeing are both options here, and the protected nature of the reservoir keeps conditions relatively calm and predictable. If you want to combine a trail walk with time on the water, South Glenmore Park makes that easy to do in a single outing.
Picnic Areas and Facilities
The park has designated picnic and barbecue areas positioned to take advantage of the best reservoir views. They're well-connected to the parking areas and trail network, which makes them practical rather than just scenic. After a morning on the trails or the water, they're a natural place to settle in and extend the visit.
Getting There and Getting Around
South Glenmore Park is easy to reach from most parts of Calgary, and the drive-to-trailhead time is short enough that spontaneous visits are genuinely practical. Parking is spread across multiple access points throughout the park, so you're not funnelled into one crowded lot. This also lets you choose your starting point based on which section of the trail you want to hit first.
The mix of paved and unpaved options means the park works for groups with different needs. Families with young kids can stay on the smooth pathways without missing the best views, while anyone wanting a bit more of a natural feel can head onto the dirt trails without going far from the main route. It's a flexible setup that handles mixed groups well.
Because the park sits within the city, services and amenities are close by — useful context if you're bringing kids or newcomers to the outdoors who might appreciate knowing that help is never far away.
