Our favorite hikes in Western Newfoundland

Western Newfoundland runs along the Gulf of St. Lawrence, backed by the Long Range Mountains. It is home to Gros Morne National Park, Deer Lake and Corner Brook; farther south lie Stephenville and Port aux Basques, and to the north the Viking Trail leads to Port au Choix and L'Anse aux Meadows.

The trail in the region

Western Brook Pond is a freshwater fjord: carved by glaciers and later cut off from the sea, it is lined with cliffs that drop straight into the water. The trail to it leaves the parking area and crosses forest to the boat dock, on a flat gravel path; the boat tours leave from there, the usual way to see the fjord.

Before you go

The boat tours are seasonal and best booked ahead; check with Parks Canada. Dogs are not allowed on board. The weather changes quickly near the gulf, so bring a waterproof layer, even in summer. A national park entry fee applies.
