Trail description

Description

Mount St. Louis Moonstone sits in the Southern Georgian Bay region of Ontario, and while the name might ring a bell for skiers, this trail offers a completely different kind of experience. Lace up your hiking boots and you'll find a straightforward, enjoyable route that works well for families, beginners, and anyone looking for a relaxed outing in the rolling terrain of this part of Ontario.

The Trail at a Glance

The hike covers 3.2 km with about 120 m of elevation gain, rated Easy and typically completed in around 1 hour. That combination makes it a solid choice when you want to get outside without committing to a full-day adventure. The modest elevation change gives the route just enough variety to keep things interesting — you're not walking a flat path the whole time, but you're not grinding up steep switchbacks either.

What the Terrain Is Like

The landscape here reflects the character of Southern Georgian Bay: mixed woodland, gentle ridgelines, and the kind of quiet that comes from being away from major urban centres. The 120 m of elevation change plays out gradually across the route, giving you a sense of climbing without ever feeling punishing. The forested sections provide good shade in warmer months, and the higher points along the trail open up the surroundings enough to give you a feel for the broader landscape of the region.

The trail surface is manageable for most footwear, though proper hiking shoes or trail runners will always serve you better than casual sneakers, especially if conditions are wet. The Georgian Bay region can see significant rainfall, and muddy stretches are a real possibility depending on the season.

Who This Trail Is For

At 3.2 km and rated Easy, this is genuinely accessible. Families with kids who are comfortable walking for an hour will do fine here. Older hikers or those returning from injury looking for a low-stakes outing will appreciate the manageable distance and elevation. It also works well as a warm-up hike if you're spending a few days in the area and want to ease into longer routes.

That said, "Easy" doesn't mean "boring." The 120 m of gain means your legs will know they did something, and the natural setting makes the hour feel worthwhile rather than like a chore.

Practical Tips Before You Go

  • Water: Bring more than you think you need, even for a short hike. An hour on the trail in warm weather adds up.
  • Footwear: Trail shoes or hiking boots are recommended, particularly after rain.
  • Timing: An early morning start gives you the best chance of cooler temperatures and quieter trails.
  • Weather: Check conditions before heading out — the Southern Georgian Bay area can shift quickly, and the trail experience changes significantly between dry and wet conditions.
  • Leave No Trace: Pack out everything you bring in. These natural areas stay enjoyable because people take care of them.

Getting the Most Out of the Visit

Because the hike itself wraps up in about an hour, Mount St. Louis Moonstone pairs well with other activities in the Southern Georgian Bay region. The area has plenty to explore beyond this single trail, so consider building a half-day or full-day itinerary around it rather than making it a standalone trip if you're driving from a distance.

The trail is a good reminder that not every worthwhile hike needs to be a grueling multi-hour expedition. Sometimes an hour in the woods, with a bit of climbing and a quiet stretch of Ontario forest, is exactly what the day calls for.

Mount Saint Louis is a great place to bring the family and ski for the day. They put a ton of effort into the hill and they're always making it better. Some of the best snow conditions in Ontario, and there is always an amazing park. The 382m vertical offers enough challenge while remaining family-friendly, and the easy highway access makes day trips convenient.

Bought my very first ever 5x5 pass today. Fun and friendly staff everywhere on the property, especially the office ladies. Looking forward to the season! The convenient location off Highway 400 makes it easy to get here regularly, and with 382m of vertical, there's plenty to explore. Great value for a season pass compared to other Southern Ontario resorts.

Not busy and they have small hills for beginners and big hills for experienced people. The 382m vertical drop provides good progression from easy green runs to challenging blacks. Being less crowded than Blue Mountain makes it perfect for learning. The variety of terrain accommodates all skill levels within the same resort, making it ideal for mixed-ability groups.

Convenient to access as it is right off the exit of Highway 400, compared to Blue Mountain. Crowded on weekends (but not as crowded as Blue Mountain). Slopes are not as steep as Blue Mountain, and progression of slopes is decent (from green to blacks). It is a decent place to learn skiing, although the blacks are not as steep as some of the blue runs on Blue Mountain. The 382m vertical provides good variety for progression.

One of the better ski hills in Southern Ontario, lots of runs to choose from and lots of lifts as well so you likely won't be waiting too long. The hill is fairly large with a solid 382m vertical drop. Located right off Highway 400 at exit 116, it's much more accessible than Blue Mountain. The variety of terrain keeps things interesting for multiple visits.
