Trail description
History on the Ground
This route carries enormous historical weight. The Minnesota River valley was the heart of Dakota homeland for centuries before European contact. The river itself — called Mnísota Wakpá in the Dakota language, meaning "sky-tinted water" — gave the state its name. Traveling this corridor, you're moving through land that witnessed the fur trade era, the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, and the forced removal of Dakota people from their homeland.
Fort Snelling, at the eastern terminus where the Minnesota meets the Mississippi, is one of the most significant historical sites in the region. Built in the 1820s, it served as a military outpost, a center of trade, and, critically, the site where enslaved people including Dred Scott were held — a fact that has reshaped how the fort's history is interpreted and presented today. The Minnesota Historical Society manages the fort and offers programming that engages seriously with this complex legacy.
The corridor passes through communities and landscapes shaped by the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, one of the most significant conflicts in American history. The largest mass execution in U.S. history (38 Dakota men) took place in 1862 in Mankato, though the specific sites are located in the town itself rather than directly along the hiking corridor. This is not a route where history sits quietly in the background — it's present and it matters.
