Description
Eggleston Falls is a short, rewarding hike in New York's Capital-Saratoga region that punches well above its weight. At just 1.6 km with only 30 meters of elevation gain, it's the kind of trail that works for just about everyone — families with young kids, beginners looking for their first waterfall hike, or experienced hikers who want a quick outing without a full-day commitment. You can be back at the trailhead in about 30 minutes, though most people linger longer once they reach the falls.
The Trail
The path to Eggleston Falls is straightforward and well-suited to its Easy difficulty rating. The elevation gain is gentle and spread out over the route, so there's no single steep section that'll catch you off guard. The trail moves through forested terrain, and the sound of water tends to grow gradually as you get closer to the falls — a reliable sign you're heading in the right direction.
Footing near the waterfall itself deserves some attention. Wet rock near cascades can be slippery, so footwear with decent grip is a smart call even on a trail this short. Sandals or flat-soled shoes aren't ideal here. Beyond that, standard day-hike prep is all you need: water, a snack, and a layer if the weather's uncertain.
The Falls
The waterfall is the clear highlight of this hike, and it delivers. Water moves over layered rock formations, dropping into pools below and creating the kind of scene that makes you want to sit down and stay a while. The geology here reflects years of water carving through the rock — smooth faces, defined channels, and a tiered structure that gives the falls visual depth.
The pools at the base are natural rest spots. Many hikers stop here to eat, take photos, or simply enjoy the sound of moving water before heading back. It's a genuinely peaceful place, and the short distance means you don't arrive exhausted — you actually get to enjoy it.
Water volume shifts with the seasons. Spring typically brings the most dramatic flow as snowmelt and rain push more water through the system. Summer is comfortable for hiking with full green canopy overhead. Fall adds a layer of color to the whole scene — the contrast between autumn foliage, white water, and dark rock is worth timing a visit around if you can.
Who It's For
Eggleston Falls works particularly well as an entry point for people new to hiking. The distance and elevation are non-intimidating, the payoff is immediate and visual, and the round trip fits easily into a morning or afternoon without requiring a full day's planning. It's also a solid option for hikers with kids who are old enough to manage a short forest trail but not yet ready for longer outings.
For more experienced hikers, this trail is best treated as part of a broader day out in the Capital-Saratoga region rather than a standalone destination. The 30-minute estimated time reflects the trail's compact nature, and those looking for a longer physical challenge will want to pair it with other nearby options.
