The Elmore Mountain Trail
The main hiking draw here is the trail to Elmore Mountain's summit, which climbs 451 meters over 8.7 kilometers through mixed hardwood and coniferous forest. This moderately challenging hike typically takes around 2-3 hours to reach the top, making it accessible to most hikers with reasonable fitness while still providing a solid workout. The trail begins near the lake and winds steadily upward through dense woodland, where you'll walk among maples, birches, and evergreens that create a natural canopy overhead.
As you ascend, the forest floor changes from the rich, dark soil near the lake to the rockier terrain typical of Vermont's mountain slopes. The path is well-maintained but includes some steeper sections and occasional rocky scrambles that add interest without becoming technical. The steady climb keeps you engaged without overwhelming less experienced hikers, though you'll definitely feel the elevation gain in your legs.
About halfway up, you'll notice the trees beginning to thin, offering glimpses of the lake below and hints of the panoramic views waiting at the top. These preview moments build anticipation and provide natural rest stops where you can catch your breath and appreciate how much elevation you've already gained.
The summit rewards hikers with sweeping views across Vermont's rolling countryside. From this vantage point, you can see Lake Elmore spread out directly below, its blue waters contrasting beautifully with the surrounding green forests. On clear days, the vista extends across multiple ridgelines and valleys, showcasing the classic Vermont landscape of farms, forests, and distant mountains. The open summit features a historic fire tower that provides 360-degree views when open, offering an exceptional vantage point across the region.
