Description
Moss Glen Falls stands out as one of Vermont's most accessible waterfall destinations, tucked away in the forests near Stowe. This cascading waterfall on Moss Glen Brook creates a perfect introduction to Vermont's natural beauty, offering the reward of a stunning waterfall without the commitment of a challenging hike.
The falls themselves are a multi-tiered spectacle where water tumbles over a series of rocky ledges covered in the vibrant green moss that gives the location its name. The main drop creates a graceful curtain of water that pools in a tranquil basin below, surrounded by weathered granite and forest. The moss-covered rocks create an almost fairy-tale atmosphere, especially when morning light filters through the canopy above.
The Trail Experience
The trailhead sits conveniently off Route 100, making this waterfall easily accessible for visitors staying in Stowe or passing through the area. The 0.5-mile trail follows a well-established path through mixed hardwood and coniferous forest, with the sound of Moss Glen Brook serving as your guide for much of the journey.
The terrain is generally gentle with some rocky sections and root-covered areas that can become slippery when wet. You'll cross the brook on a small footbridge and navigate around some larger boulders as you approach the falls. The trail gains about 107 meters in elevation over its short distance, creating a noticeable but manageable climb that most hikers complete in 1 to 2 hours round trip.
As you walk deeper into the forest, the canopy closes overhead, creating a cool, shaded environment even on warm summer days. The understory is rich with ferns, wildflowers, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife. The babbling brook provides a constant soundtrack, growing louder as you approach your destination.
Seasonal Considerations
Moss Glen Falls offers distinct experiences throughout the year. Summer visits reveal the falls surrounded by lush greenery, with the moss at its most vibrant and the forest floor carpeted with ferns. The pool below the falls provides a refreshing mist on hot days, though swimming is not recommended due to the rocky bottom and cold water temperatures.
Autumn transforms the area into a showcase of Vermont's famous fall foliage. The contrast between the evergreen moss, golden and red maple leaves, and the white cascade of water creates exceptional photographic opportunities. This is arguably the most popular time to visit, so expect more company on the trail during peak foliage season in late September and early October.
Winter visits are possible but require extra caution as the trail can become icy and the rocks around the falls extremely slippery. The falls may partially freeze, creating interesting ice formations, but proper winter hiking gear and experience are essential.
What Makes This Location Special
Unlike many of Vermont's more remote waterfalls, Moss Glen Falls near Stowe strikes an ideal balance between accessibility and natural beauty. The short distance makes it perfect for families with children, older hikers, or anyone looking for a quick nature escape without a full day commitment. Yet the destination feels genuinely wild and secluded once you reach the falls.
The geological features here tell the story of Vermont's landscape formation. The rocky ledges show clear evidence of glacial activity, and the way water has carved channels through the granite over thousands of years creates interesting patterns and formations beyond just the main waterfall.
Photography enthusiasts will find numerous angles and compositions, from wide shots capturing the entire cascade to close-up details of water flowing over moss-covered rocks. The changing light throughout the day creates different moods, with early morning and late afternoon offering the most dramatic lighting conditions.
Practical Information
Sturdy footwear is essential for this hike. While the trail isn't technically difficult, the rocky sections and potentially wet conditions around the falls require shoes with good grip. Hiking boots or trail shoes work best, though athletic shoes with decent tread can suffice in dry conditions.
The area around the falls can be quite slippery, especially on the moss-covered rocks near the water. Exercise caution when moving around for different viewpoints or photo angles. The rocks may look stable but can be deceptively slick even when they appear dry.
Parking is available near the trailhead off Route 100, though spaces can fill up during peak times, particularly on weekends during foliage season. The location's proximity to Stowe means it's easily combined with other activities in the area, whether you're staying in town or just passing through the region.
For those interested in extending their adventure, several other trails in the immediate area offer opportunities to explore more of Vermont's landscape. The region around Stowe provides numerous hiking options ranging from gentle walks to challenging mountain ascents, making Moss Glen Falls an excellent starting point for discovering what Vermont's outdoor recreation has to offer.
This waterfall represents Vermont hiking at its most approachable – beautiful, accessible, and genuinely rewarding without requiring advanced planning or specialized equipment.
