Trail description

The Terrain

The trail follows the crest of North Fork Mountain, a long sandstone ridge that rises sharply above the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River to the east and the Smoke Hole Canyon area to the west. The ridge itself is narrow and rocky in places, with open outcrops of Tuscarora Sandstone that give the trail its character. You're walking on ancient geology here — the exposed rock is hard, pale, and unforgiving underfoot, so good boots matter.

The forest along the ridge is a mix of oak, pine, and mountain laurel, with the canopy thinning out considerably near the exposed rocky sections. Because the ridge is so narrow and elevated, the vegetation stays scrubby in the most windswept spots, which is exactly what opens up the views. Expect some sections of trail that are well-defined and easy to follow, and others where the path crosses open rock slabs and requires a bit more attention to stay on route.
