The Fortress is a 19 km round trip hike with 1050 metres of elevation gain, taking approximately 7 hours to complete. The route traverses three alpine lakes before reaching the 3,016-metre summit.
The old Fortress Mountain ski area access road is now closed, adding an extra 8 km to your journey before the main ascent begins.
The upper mountain is typically accessible from mid-summer through early fall (June to September) once snowpack has cleared. Highway 40 south of Kananaskis Lakes is closed seasonally from December 1 to June 15.
A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for all vehicles parking in Kananaskis Country. Enforcement is active.
No. The Fortress is best suited for experienced hikers and scramblers comfortable with open, rocky terrain, route-finding on unmarked ground, and significant elevation gain. Solid baseline fitness and mountain experience are required.
