Trail description

Description

Premier Lake Provincial Park sits in the heart of the Kootenay Rockies, offering a genuinely accessible slice of mountain wilderness without requiring a serious expedition to get there. Located just off Highway 93/95 near Skookumchuck, the park feels far more remote than its easy road access would suggest. The centerpiece is a crystal-clear mountain lake ringed by dense forest and dramatic peaks — on calm mornings, the reflections on the water are worth the drive alone.

What makes Premier Lake worth returning to is its range. You can hike a ridgeline in the morning, fish from shore in the afternoon, and spend the evening watching ospreys work the water before the stars come out. The park is compact enough that the lake is never far away, but the terrain has enough variety to keep you busy for a full weekend.

The Lake Loop Trail

The main hiking option here is the lake loop trail, a 2.5 km route with 200 metres of elevation gain that most people complete in about an hour and fifteen minutes. The difficulty is rated easy, making it a solid choice for families, casual hikers, or anyone who wants to stretch their legs without committing to a serious climb.

The trail winds around Premier Lake's shoreline on a surface of mostly packed earth with some rocky sections mixed in. The views shift constantly as you move around the water — you get the open lake on one side and dense mixed forest on the other, with the surrounding peaks framing everything above the treeline. There are several natural stopping points along the way where you can sit, take photos, or just watch the water for a while.

The loop is also one of the better wildlife-watching walks in the area. Animals come to the lake's edge to drink throughout the day, and the trail's gentle pace gives you time to actually notice what's moving in the trees and along the shoreline.

Premier Ridge Trail

For hikers looking for more of a challenge, the Premier Ridge Trail is the park's signature route. It climbs steadily through mixed forest before breaking out into alpine terrain, where the views open up across the Kootenay Rockies. From the ridge, you can trace the valleys cutting through the landscape and, on clear days, pick out distant glaciated summits on the horizon. It's a meaningful payoff for the effort, and the contrast between the forested climb and the open ridge makes the transition feel earned.

Wildlife

Deer and moose are regularly spotted in the park, particularly in the meadows and along the marshy edges of the lake. Early morning and evening are your best windows — these animals are most active at the edges of the day, and the low light makes for better photos too.

Black bears live in the area. Sightings aren't constant, but the dense forest and berry patches make this solid bear habitat. If you're camping, proper food storage isn't optional. Make noise on the trail and stay aware, especially in areas with limited sightlines.

Birdwatchers will find the lake particularly productive. Ospreys nest near the water and dive for fish regularly — you'll hear their calls before you see them most of the time. Bald eagles also patrol overhead, and the mix of open water, forest edge, and alpine meadow higher up draws a solid variety of species across the season.

Fishing and Paddling

Premier Lake has a real reputation among anglers for its rainbow trout and kokanee salmon. The water is cold and clear, and fishing holds up well through the open water season. Shore fishing works from multiple spots around the lake, with the deeper sections near the inlet and outlet generally producing the best results. Early morning and evening are the most productive times, when fish are feeding closer to the surface.

Non-motorized boats are permitted on the lake, and a canoe or kayak opens up the quieter bays that you can't reach easily on foot. The lake's sheltered position means wind and waves are rarely an issue, which makes paddling here genuinely relaxing rather than a workout. The boat launch provides basic water access — bring everything you need, as there are no rentals or supplies available in the park.

Camping

The campground at Premier Lake is set among mature trees, with sites spaced well enough apart to give you some privacy. Basic amenities cover the essentials: picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and potable water. Both tents and RVs are accommodated, though the setup leans toward a genuine camping experience rather than anything resort-adjacent.

The park's location away from major population centres means light pollution is minimal. On clear nights, the Milky Way is visible overhead, and the combination of dark skies and clean mountain air makes for stargazing that's hard to replicate closer to town. Mornings bring bird calls, the occasional splash from the lake, and the general sense that the day is starting on its own terms.

Getting There

Premier Lake Provincial Park is easily reached from Highway 93/95 near Skookumchuck. The access roads are well-maintained and manageable for most vehicles, though checking current road conditions before heading out is always a reasonable step in mountain terrain. The park works well as a standalone destination or as a base for exploring the broader Kootenay Rockies region, with other parks and points of interest within reasonable driving distance.

Nice accessible location right off Highway 93/95 via Premier Lake Road access. The parking area at the day-use facility is adequate and well-maintained. Fall colors were spectacular during our visit along the 2.5km trail. The moderate 200m elevation gain makes it suitable for most fitness levels. Wish they had free access though, unlike many provincial trails.

Perfect summer evening hike covering the full 2.5km loop! The lake was calm and reflective, creating amazing photo opportunities from the 200m elevation viewpoints. The trail system is well-marked and the gentle elevation provides just enough challenge for the 1h15 duration. Worth every penny of the entrance fee. Already planning our next visit for different lighting conditions.

Absolutely loved this spot! The lake is stunning and the 2.5km trail network offers various options from the day-use area. We spent the whole day exploring different paths, well beyond the 1h15 estimated time. The facilities are excellent and justify the entry fee. Great for families with the easy difficulty level, just remember no pets allowed on trails.

Beautiful provincial park with well-maintained trails around the lake. The 200m elevation gain over 2.5km provides nice viewpoints without being too strenuous - perfect for the 1h15 estimated duration. Parking fees apply but worth it for the excellent facilities at the day-use area. Perfect spot for a peaceful morning walk, though be aware dogs aren't allowed on the trails.

Great early spring hike with my teenage kids. The trail conditions were good despite recent snow melt. We appreciated the day-use facilities and the variety of trail options available. The fees are reasonable considering the park maintenance. Would definitely return in summer for different scenery.
