Trail System and Terrain
The reservation offers around 13 kilometers of maintained trails that move through a surprisingly diverse mix of terrain for a park this close to urban New Jersey. You'll transition between dense hardwood forest, open meadow sections, rocky outcroppings, and quiet stream valleys — sometimes within the same hour of walking. The elevation gain across the full network is approximately 135 meters, which provides accessible hiking with enough vertical relief to give the hike some texture.
The Watchung Reservation History Trail is the most popular route, covering approximately 9.8 kilometers with 135 meters of elevation gain. This trail visits and identifies sites of historic interest throughout the reservation, taking you through mature forest canopy, along ridgelines, and through sections where the landscape opens up enough to get a sense of the broader Watchung Mountains. Plan for roughly 3.5 hours if you're moving at a comfortable pace and stopping to take things in. It's rated easy, but the length means you'll want to come prepared.
If a full loop isn't what you're after, the Lake Surprise Loop offers a shorter, more contained option. The trail wraps around the reservation's main lake, with calm water views and good opportunities to spot waterfowl. The terrain is gentler here, and the pace is more relaxed — it works well as a standalone outing or as a warm-up before tackling longer sections of the network.

Les références au 'Sierra Trail', 'Blue Trail', et 'White Trail' dans les notes techniques n'ont pas de confirmation dans les résultats web."
