The main hiking route is approximately 10.2 km (round trip). The full perimeter trail is 20.4 miles with 3,294 feet of elevation gain.
Yes. Round Valley is the only New Jersey state park offering wilderness camping. Primitive campsites on the south-eastern side are accessible by backpacking 3-6 miles on steep and rugged trails or by boat. Permits must be obtained in advance from the New Jersey State Park Service.
The terrain is rocky, rooted, and uneven throughout. Expect up-and-down hills with surfaces varying between packed dirt and softball-sized rocks. Sturdy hiking footwear with ankle support is strongly recommended.
