The Landscape
False Cape sits on a narrow strip of land between Barbour Hill Lake and the Atlantic Ocean. The terrain is flat and coastal, shaped by wind, water, and time. You'll move through a mix of maritime forest, freshwater marshes, barrier beach, and open dune systems. The vegetation shifts noticeably as you travel — dense stands of live oak and loblolly pine give way to open grasslands and then to the raw, exposed edge of the beach itself.
The park takes its name from the cape-like shape of the coastline here, which historically fooled sailors into thinking they had reached Cape Henry. That geographic quirk has a long history, and the land itself carries traces of it — from old hunting and fishing communities that once operated in the area to the quiet, weathered character of the landscape today.
