Why hike in Lower Saint John River Valley?

The Saint John River flows through Fredericton, the provincial capital, before reaching the Bay of Fundy at Saint John. Upstream of the city, the Mactaquac dam has created a long reservoir on the river.

Fredericton and the reservoir

Odell Park is a forest park in Fredericton itself. Mactaquac Provincial Park lies on the Mactaquac reservoir, upstream of the city. West of Fredericton, near Kingsclear, Woolastook Park is a trail network that runs along the river; it is shared with mountain bikers.

Farther from the city

Welsford Falls, in the Nerepis River valley south of Fredericton, is reached by a short walk through the woods. Crabbe Mountain, northwest of Fredericton, is best known for its ski area.

Before you go

At Woolastook, yield to mountain bikers. Forest trails are muddy in spring: closed shoes make a difference.
