Trail description

Description

Camping Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts - Centre De Plein Air sits in the heart of the Laurentides, a region known for big landscapes and easy access to the outdoors. It’s an option that works whether you’re planning to spend most of your time on foot, mixing in a bit of paddling, or just looking for a quiet place to unplug with trees and water all around you.

One of the biggest practical advantages is location: it’s a short drive from Montreal, which makes it realistic for a weekend escape without losing half your trip to the road. Once you arrive, the setting quickly shifts into classic Laurentides scenery—lush forest, serene lakes, and mountain views that feel far removed from the city.

Setting and what it feels like on site

This area of the Laurentides is the kind of landscape that naturally invites you to slow down. Forest cover is a big part of the experience here: expect stretches of dense woods where the air feels cooler and quieter, with the route opening up at times to show off the broader valleys and the surrounding mountains. Lakes add a calmer, reflective feel to the day—whether you’re looking at them from shore, passing near them on foot, or getting out on the water.

If you’re visiting to hike, the appeal is the variety. You can keep things simple with a gentle walk that’s comfortable for families, or aim for a more challenging outing where the effort is rewarded with wide views. If you’re coming primarily to relax, the same landscape works in your favor: a campfire, still water nearby, and forest all around makes it easy to disconnect from everyday noise and screens.

Camping and accommodations

Camping Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts offers accommodations for different styles of trips. You can pitch a tent and keep things classic, sleeping under the stars, or choose the comfort of a cozy cabin. The sites are designed with privacy in mind, so you’re not packed in, but you still stay connected to the natural setting—meaning the forest doesn’t feel like a backdrop, it feels like you’re in it.

This is the kind of place that fits a range of plans: a simple overnight before a full day on nearby trails, a family-friendly weekend where the schedule stays flexible, or a longer stay where you rotate between hiking, water time, and evenings around the fire.

Hiking: trail options and highlights

The hiking in and around the Centre De Plein Air is described as “something for everyone,” and that’s the most helpful way to think about it when planning. There are gentle walks suited to families, as well as more demanding hikes that aim for panoramic views. If your group has mixed abilities, it’s a good base because you can choose an easier outing one day and a tougher one the next without having to change locations.

A standout nearby route is the Montagne Verte trail. It’s called out as a must-visit, and it’s easy to see why: it offers an invigorating climb through dense forest, and the payoff is a set of breathtaking vistas over the surrounding valleys. In practical terms, you can expect a steady, energy-raising ascent where the woods keep things shaded and immersive, followed by the kind of viewpoint that makes you pause and look around for a while before heading back down.

If you’re someone who likes a hike that feels like a clear “journey” rather than a flat stroll, Montagne Verte is the one to put on your list here: forest on the way up, open views at the top, and the sense of moving from enclosed greenery to big Laurentides space.

Beyond hiking: water and downtime activities

The Centre De Plein Air isn’t just for hikers. If you like to mix activities in a single trip, there are several easy ways to fill out your day without needing to leave the area. You can get out canoeing on crystal-clear waters, try fishing, or keep things simple and spend time by the campfire. That mix is useful if weather shifts or if someone in your group wants a slower pace—one person can hike while others stay closer to camp and still feel like they’ve had a “real outdoors day.”

The lakes also add a different texture to the trip: even if you’re not paddling, being near calm water changes the feel of the campsite and can be a great way to wind down after a climb, especially if you’ve spent most of your day in the forest.

Who this place suits best

This campground and outdoor centre makes sense for a few types of visitors:

  • Hikers who want options: from family-friendly walks to more challenging hikes with panoramic rewards.
  • Weekend travelers from Montreal: it’s close enough to be practical while still feeling like a full change of scenery.
  • Groups with mixed interests: hiking, canoeing, fishing, and relaxed camp time can all happen in the same trip.
  • Anyone looking to unplug: the combination of forest, lakes, and mountain views supports a quieter, slower-paced stay.

The overall vibe is outdoors-first but flexible: you can build your trip around one big hike, or you can keep things light and move between short walks, time on the water, and evenings by the fire.

On-the-ground experience and planning notes

Because the setting includes forest, lakes, and mountains, it helps to plan for a day that may shift between shaded woods and open viewpoints. The climb on Montagne Verte, in particular, is described as invigorating, which is a good cue to bring what you need for a more active outing and to pace yourself if you’re hiking with kids or newer hikers. For families, the presence of gentle trails means you can still get a satisfying nature walk without committing to a big climb every day.

On the camping side, it’s worth thinking about what kind of evening you want. Tent camping gives you the classic under-the-stars experience, while cabins add comfort if you’re extending your stay or if you prefer a more sheltered base between hikes and time on the water.

Staff are described as friendly and ready to assist, which is helpful if you’re arriving for the first time and want to get oriented to what’s available on site, whether you’re prioritizing hiking routes, water activities, or simply finding the best way to settle into your campsite and enjoy the surroundings.

The trails are a bit confusing - not well marked. We didn't manage to visit it all the way - there was a bear roaming the area :/

Great campground. Well maintained. Public beach is also nice and included in rate. Washrooms and showers could use some much needed updating.

My personal sanctuary and cross-country ski heaven. The trails are well groomed and offer varioua levels of challenge. There is a very quaint cottage in the mid point with a wood oven heater. The chalet has wi-fi and a fire place to recover after skiing or snow-shoeing.

Very nice campground, but I’ve never been somewhere with so many rules.... holy cow... don’t fart here... also, don’t bother using the wifi, it does not work. But as a summer retreat community, if you are a permanent unit, I suspect you are well taken care of.

I have been skiing and snowshoeing here since it was first opened two decades ago. The chalet is large and welcoming, there are rentals of all types, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Right off highway 15, exit 83.
