Trail description

Description

Parc De La Promenade-Bellerive is one of those MontrĂ©al spots that feels like a small escape without actually leaving the city. Set right along the banks of the St. Lawrence River, it’s a calm, green place where you can stretch your legs, get some fresh air, and spend time outdoors with the river always nearby.

Because it sits on the waterfront, the experience here is as much about the views as it is about the walking. You’ll move through leafy sections of parkland and open areas where the river steals the show, with long sightlines and a steady sense of space that’s hard to find in busier parts of town.

Where you are and what makes it different

The park’s location is the main draw: you’re on a scenic stretch of the St. Lawrence River, with a front-row seat to the water and the changing light throughout the day. Even though you’re in MontrĂ©al, the setting feels quieter than you’d expect, which is why it works so well for a quick nature break or a longer, unhurried outing.

It’s also a good “everyone can enjoy it” kind of park. Some people show up specifically to hike, while others come for a simple walk, a picnic, or to let kids burn off energy at the playground. That mix gives the park a relaxed, everyday feel rather than a remote backcountry vibe.

Trails and hiking experience

Parc De La Promenade-Bellerive has a network of well-maintained trails, and they’re set up to work for hikers of all levels. If you want something easy and steady, you can keep it to a leisurely stroll. If you want a bit more of a “hike” feel, you can choose paths that keep you moving through different corners of the park and along the river’s edge, with plenty of scenery to keep it interesting.

The trails are clearly marked, which makes this a low-stress place to explore. You can focus on the walk itself—pace, conversation, taking photos—without constantly double-checking where you are. Underfoot, expect typical city-park trail conditions: maintained pathways through green space rather than rugged wilderness terrain. The overall feel is approachable and comfortable, making it a good option if you’re easing into hiking, going out with family, or just looking for a straightforward walk with great views.

Along the way, keep your eyes open for local wildlife. The park’s mix of greenery and water makes it a natural place to notice birds and small animals as you go, especially when things are quieter. The river vistas are the other constant highlight: even when you’re walking through more treed areas, you’ll get openings and viewpoints that pull you back toward the shoreline and the wide St. Lawrence.

Scenery and what you’ll see

This is a park where the scenery comes in layers. You’ll have lush greenery around you—enough to feel like you’re spending time in nature—paired with the open, reflective surface of the river nearby. The combination is what gives the trails their character: you’re not just walking through trees, and you’re not just walking beside water; you’re moving between both.

Because the views can be a big part of the outing, it’s worth bringing a camera. Between the picturesque river vistas and the park’s calmer atmosphere, there are plenty of moments that feel worth capturing, whether that’s a wide shot of the St. Lawrence or smaller details along the trail.

Getting there and access

One of the easiest things about Parc De La Promenade-Bellerive is how accessible it is. It’s located just a short drive from downtown MontrĂ©al, so you can fit it into a day without committing to a long trek out of the city. That convenience makes it a realistic option for an after-work walk, a weekend morning outdoors, or a quick reset when you want nature without a big plan.

Parking is straightforward, with ample parking available. If you’re not driving, there are public transportation options nearby as well, which helps if you’re visiting MontrĂ©al and don’t have a car, or if you simply prefer to arrive by transit and start walking right away.

Picnics, families, and staying awhile

If you want the day to be more than just a walk, the park’s picnic areas make it easy to slow down and spend time outside. You can take a break mid-walk or plan your visit around a meal, settling in among the greenery with the river close by. It’s the kind of setup that works for a solo lunch, a casual meet-up with friends, or a family outing where people want a mix of walking and relaxing.

Families will also appreciate that there’s a playground on-site. That adds a simple but important option: kids can play while adults take a breather, or you can build a visit that includes both trail time and play time without needing to go anywhere else.

How to plan your visit

What makes this park work so well is flexibility. You can come here specifically for a quiet, peaceful walk when you want a bit of solitude, sticking to the trails and letting the river views do the heavy lifting. Or you can plan a social outing—friends, family, a picnic—where the trails are part of a bigger, easygoing day outside.

If you’re heading out for a hike, wearing comfortable walking shoes is usually enough for a well-maintained, clearly marked trail system like this. If your main goal is the scenery, give yourself time to pause at viewpoints along the St. Lawrence River, and keep your camera handy so you don’t have to dig for it when the light and the water line up for a great shot.

Overall, Parc De La Promenade-Bellerive is best approached as a simple, scenic Montréal outdoor destination: clear trails, greenery, local wildlife, and memorable river vistas, with the bonus of easy access, parking, public transit nearby, picnic areas, and a playground.

What a tranquil spot for photography! I visited in early September and the colors were just starting to change. The reflective views of the water really captured my interest. I spent hours capturing images of the landscape and the local wildlife. The park is well-suited for photographers, and I found plenty of corners that felt peaceful and isolated. Highly recommend for anyone looking to connect with nature and take beautiful photos!

I went for a run at Parc De La Promenade-Bellerive on a hot July morning. The tree coverage provided plenty of shade, which kept me cool. However, I noticed some areas needed attention, particularly the litter around the picnic benches. Despite this, the trail is well-maintained for a light workout, and the proximity to the water adds a refreshing touch. I hope they improve the cleanliness soon.

I visited Parc De La Promenade-Bellerive in early June, and I was greeted by blooming wildflowers along the pathways. The easy trails made it perfect for a leisurely family outing. My kids loved spotting butterflies and small birds. The picnic areas are great for lunch breaks, but I'd recommend getting there early as they can fill up quickly. Overall, a delightful day out in nature!
