Howland Island Trail is a well-maintained loop trail located near Port Byron, New York, within the Montezuma Wildlife Management Area. This moderately challenging route offers exceptional habitat diversity across its 4.4-mile length, featuring dirt roads and forest paths that wind through a mix of ecological zones.
Terrain and Landscape
The trail traverses diverse terrain including dirt roads, forest paths winding through woods, grasslands, agricultural fields, and managed marshes. Hikers will encounter low-lying floodplains and gently rolling drumlins, with open sections providing extensive exposure to the elements. The footing is generally good on the main dike roads, though some sections can get muddy after rain. The variety of habitats creates shifting views—open water and marsh in impoundment areas, mixed hardwood forest in upland sections, and agricultural fields in managed areas.
Wildlife and Natural Features
The managed marshes and impoundments attract waterfowl, wading birds including great blue herons and great egrets, and osprey hunting over open water. The diverse habitat supports white-tailed deer, beaver, muskrat, and various turtle species. Spring and fall migration seasons bring the highest concentrations of birds. Wildflowers flourish in spring, particularly in upland forest areas.
