🔥 What makes the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe so popular?
Honestly, when I first unboxed this stove, I had a moment of doubt. 73 grams - that's lighter than an apple! And yet, this little piece of metal will become your best friend for preparing meals in nature.
The difference from the classic PocketRocket? MSR added a pressure regulator that maintains a constant flame even when your gas cartridge starts to empty. Trust me, it's a game-changer when you're preparing your morning coffee at -10°C and your cartridge isn't brand new anymore.
The three legs fold ultra-compactly, and the minimalist design hides impressive engineering. The WindBurner burner creates a flame that resists wind pretty well - I was able to heat my water even with gusts of 20-25 km/h on Mont du Lac des Cygnes.
| Specifications | MSR PocketRocket Deluxe | My Rating |

⚡ Real performance: my field tests
Well, manufacturer specs are nice, but what does it do in real life? I timed this little monster in different conditions, and here's what I discovered.
Test #1: Ideal conditions (summer, no wind)
First test at Parc National du Mont Saint-Bruno on a beautiful July day. Result: 3 minutes 15 seconds to boil a liter of water. MSR didn't lie! The flame was stable, blue and intense.
Test #2: Winter conditions (-15°C)
Now it gets interesting. Same cartridge, but on a cold February morning in the Hautes-Gorges de la Rivière Malbaie. Boil time: 4 minutes 45 seconds. Longer, but still very acceptable. The pressure regulator really made the difference here.
Test #3: With wind (25 km/h)
The most revealing test! On the summit of Mont Yamaska with constant wind that was giving us trouble. Without windscreen: 6 minutes 20 seconds. With an improvised windscreen (my jacket): 3 minutes 50 seconds.
What impressed me was the flame consistency even when pressure in the cartridge decreased. With my old stove without regulator, I often ended up with a pathetic little flame that took forever to heat anything.
🎒 Ease of use: simple as can be
One of the big advantages of the PocketRocket Deluxe is its disconcerting simplicity. Three steps: you unfold the legs, screw onto your cartridge, light it. Even with winter gloves, the operation remains easy.
The piezo-electric ignition system works 90% of the time. For the remaining 10% (often in very humid weather), I always have a backup lighter. It's not dramatic, but it's good to know.
Stability and safety
With its three legs that spread well, the stove offers a stable base for pots up to 20 cm in diameter. I used my MSR Titan pot and my Sea to Summit pot without problems.
However, be careful with large full pots - the center of gravity rises quickly. I almost spilled my lentil soup the first time I used a pot that was too wide. Since then, I'm more careful to properly center my containers.
🌬️ Wind resistance: the relative weak point
Let's be honest: the PocketRocket Deluxe isn't the all-around champion when it comes to wind resistance. It's its main flaw compared to stoves like the MSR WindBurner or Jetboil Flash which have integrated protection systems.
But hey, for 73 grams, you can't have everything! And with a little ingenuity (using rocks as windscreen, positioning in a sheltered spot), you can easily work around this small disadvantage.
"The secret with ultra-light stoves is choosing your cooking location. A few extra minutes to find a sheltered spot can save you 10 minutes of cooking time."
My favorite anti-wind strategies:
- Use topography: behind a rock, in a hollow, sheltered by trees
- Create a windscreen with your backpack or jacket
- Orient the stove perpendicular to prevailing wind
- Invest in a foldable windscreen ($15-20 and it's life-changing)
💰 Value for money: is it worth it?
At around $75-80 CAD, the PocketRocket Deluxe sits in the mid-range of ultra-light stoves. It's more expensive than the classic PocketRocket ($50-60), but less than integrated systems like the Jetboil ($120-150).
For me, the price difference from the base model is totally justified. The pressure regulator alone is worth the extra $20, especially if you plan to camp in cold weather or use your cartridges to the end.
| Stove | Price | Weight | Main Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSR PocketRocket 2 | $55 CAD | 73 g | Affordable price |
| MSR PocketRocket Deluxe | $75 CAD | 73 g | Pressure regulator |
| Jetboil Flash | $130 CAD | 371 g | Integrated system |
| Soto WindMaster | $85 CAD | 67 g | Wind resistance |
Who is this stove ideal for?
The PocketRocket Deluxe is the perfect choice if you:
- Do lightweight hiking and every gram counts
- Camp regularly and want reliable equipment
- Seek simplicity - no complicated gadgets
- Want a versatile stove for 3-4 seasons
- Use different types of pots
However, if you're mainly looking to boil water quickly and weight isn't an issue, an integrated system like the Jetboil might suit you better.
🔧 Maintenance and durability: built to last
After more than a year of intensive use, my PocketRocket Deluxe still looks new. The stainless steel and brass construction resists wear well, and the moving parts still work perfectly.
Maintenance is minimal:
- Jet cleaning: once per season with the provided tool
- Seal inspection: visual check before each outing
- Dry storage: always store completely dry
MSR also offers excellent after-sales service. When I had a problem with the piezo ignition (after an unfortunate fall), they replaced the defective part without asking questions.
🏔️ My usage recommendations by season
Spring and summer (my favorite season with this stove)
This is really where the PocketRocket Deluxe shines. Mild temperatures, less wind, and you can cook outside without worrying about weather conditions. Perfect for outings to Parc du Mont Arthabaska or day hikes with hot lunch breaks.
Fall (with some precautions)
Cooler nights require a bit more attention to your cartridge temperature, but nothing insurmountable. I had excellent results during my fall outings to Canyon Sainte-Anne.
Winter (doable, but with adjustments)
This is where the pressure regulator shows its value. However, below -20°C, even the best cartridge stove will struggle. For serious winter camping, consider a liquid fuel stove.
🎯 Accessories that make the difference
A few additions that transform the experience with the PocketRocket Deluxe:
- MSR windscreen ($20): essential if you often cook at altitude
- Cartridge stand ($15): stabilizes the setup on uneven terrain
- Titanium pot: lightweight and conducts heat well
- Reliable lighter: backup for piezo ignition
My favorite setup for 2-3 day outings: PocketRocket Deluxe + MSR Titan pot + windscreen + 230g cartridge. The whole thing weighs less than 400 grams and allows me to cook practically anything.
🏁 Final verdict: a purchase you won't regret
After more than a year carrying this little stove everywhere with me, I can tell you the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe deserves its reputation. Yes, it has its limits (wind resistance), but its qualities far outweigh its flaws.
Here are my key takeaways:
- Ultra-light and compact: perfect for lightweight hiking
- Consistent performance: the pressure regulator really makes the difference
- Ease of use: no learning curve
- Versatility: works with different types of pots
- Excellent value for money: investment that's worth it
If you're hesitating between this model and the classic PocketRocket, go with the Deluxe. The $20 difference is amply justified by the performance consistency, especially if you plan to use it regularly.
"A good stove is like good boots: you forget it when it works well, but you remember it for a long time when it fails you at the wrong moment."
Now, all that's left is to plan your next outing to test it! Whether for a morning coffee on the trail near Montreal or a hot dinner after a long day of hiking, this little gem will quickly become indispensable in your adventure kit.
So, ready to upgrade your outdoor cooking setup? Trust me, your taste buds and your back will thank you!
