Trail description

Description

Sherman Falls is one of the most rewarding short hikes in the Hamilton area — and honestly, one of the most underrated. Tucked just off Old Dundas Road in Ancaster, this 17-metre curtain waterfall is the kind of place that surprises people who stumble onto it for the first time. It's not a long trek to get there, but what you find at the end makes it well worth pulling on your boots.

The Falls Themselves

Sherman Falls drops a full 17 metres over ancient Niagara Escarpment rock, spreading out in a wide curtain as it falls. Locals sometimes call it Angel Falls or Fairy Falls, and once you see it, those names make sense — there's something almost otherworldly about the way the water fans out across the rock face. The falls sit on private property, but they've long been accessible to the public, and the trail to reach them is part of the Bruce Trail network.

The flow varies quite a bit depending on the season and recent rainfall. Spring is when Sherman Falls really puts on a show — snowmelt and spring rains push the volume up significantly, and the roar of the water carries well before you even see it. After a dry summer stretch, the flow can be more modest, but the setting is still worth the visit.

Getting There

The trailhead is located off Old Dundas Road in Ancaster, which is part of Hamilton. Parking is available nearby, and the access point is straightforward to find. The walk in is short and the path is well-worn — this is not a place where you'll be bushwhacking or second-guessing your route.

Because it connects to the Bruce Trail, you'll notice the familiar white blazes marking the way. If you're already familiar with hiking the Escarpment, you'll feel right at home here.

The Trail Experience

The elevation change along the route is about 17 metres, which gives you a sense of the terrain — you're working with the natural topography of the Escarpment, moving through forested sections before the falls come into view. The trail passes through a mix of mature trees and follows alongside a stream, so the soundscape builds gradually as you get closer.

The footing can get muddy and slippery, especially near the base of the falls where mist settles on the rocks. Solid footwear with good grip is genuinely important here — this isn't the kind of spot where sandals or casual sneakers are a great idea. The rocks around the falls can be deceptively slick.

What Makes It Worth the Trip

Sherman Falls sits in a natural bowl that amplifies the sound of the water, which gives the whole spot a more immersive feel than you might expect from a relatively accessible trail. The surrounding forest provides good shade in warmer months, and the combination of moving water, rock face, and tree canopy makes it a genuinely photogenic location at almost any time of year.

It's also a solid option for families with kids who are comfortable on uneven terrain, or for anyone looking for a meaningful nature experience without committing to a full-day hike.

Tips Before You Go

  • Best flow: Visit in spring or after significant rainfall for the most impressive water volume.
  • Footwear matters: Wear hiking boots or trail shoes with real grip — the rocks near the falls get wet and slippery.
  • Respect the property: The falls are on private land that's open to the public. Stay on marked paths and follow any posted signage.
  • Bring the basics: Water, a snack, and a camera or charged phone. There's no infrastructure at the falls themselves.
  • Bruce Trail connection: If you want to extend your outing, the Bruce Trail offers additional options in the area beyond the falls.

Sherman Falls is the kind of spot that earns its reputation not through scale, but through character — a genuine Escarpment waterfall that's accessible enough for most people and rewarding enough to bring you back more than once.

Visited Sherman Falls in winter and it was magical! The waterfall was partially frozen, creating beautiful ice formations. The trail can be slippery in winter conditions, so proper footwear is essential. Despite the cold, the short walk made it accessible and the winter scenery was breathtaking. Parking fees still apply in winter but there were fewer crowds, making it more peaceful.

Beautiful waterfall but quite crowded on the weekend we visited. The falls themselves are gorgeous and the short hike is easy enough for all fitness levels. However, parking was challenging and expensive at $11 for the day. The area can get noisy with so many visitors, which takes away from the natural tranquility. Would recommend visiting on weekdays or early mornings for a better experience.

Visited Sherman Falls on a crisp November morning and was impressed by the 17-meter curtain waterfall. The short walk from the paid parking area made it accessible for our elderly parents. The falls were flowing strongly after recent rains, creating a beautiful misty atmosphere. Parking cost $11 for the day but the ticket works for other Hamilton Conservation areas too. The only downside was finding the exact parking location - signage could be better.

Sherman Falls proved to be an exceptional destination for landscape photography. The waterfall's natural lighting creates stunning visual opportunities, particularly during golden hour. The trail itself presents some moderate elevation changes that keep the hike engaging without being overly strenuous. The peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty make it worth revisiting across different seasons.
