Description
Chippewa Falls is a waterfall destination in Northeastern Ontario, tucked along the Chippewa River. The falls drop approximately 26 metres, making them one of the more dramatic natural features in the region. Whether you're coming for the roar of the water or just a solid half-day outing in the bush, this spot delivers.
The Trail
The walking trail covers 5 km with about 150 m of elevation change, and most hikers wrap it up in roughly 30 minutes of moving time — though you'll likely want to linger at the falls themselves. The path leads down to the base of the falls, where you get a ground-level view of the full drop. There are also viewing platforms along the way that give you different perspectives on the cascade, so it's worth pausing at each one rather than rushing straight to the bottom.
The terrain follows the river corridor, which means the trail has some natural variation — rooted sections, a few rocky patches near the water, and the kind of uneven ground you'd expect close to an active waterfall. Nothing technical, but sturdy footwear is a smart call, especially if the ground is wet.
The Falls
At 26 metres high, Chippewa Falls has enough height to generate real noise and mist when the water is running strong. The falls are best experienced in spring and early summer, when snowmelt and rain push the flow to its peak. That's when the cascade is widest and loudest, and the mist can reach the lower viewing area. Later in the season the water level drops, but the falls remain worth the trip — the exposed rock face and the river channel below are interesting in their own right.
The Chippewa River cuts through the Canadian Shield here, and the geology shows. The rock walls framing the falls are ancient and worn, and the river has carved a tight gorge that funnels the water into a concentrated drop. It's the kind of place that looks like it belongs on a postcard but feels genuinely remote when you're standing at the bottom.
Getting There and Access
Chippewa Falls sits in Northeastern Ontario, and like many natural sites in this part of the province, getting there involves some driving on rural roads. The falls are accessible from multiple viewing platforms, and the trail to the base is clearly defined. There's no technical scrambling required to reach the main viewpoints.
Spring and summer are the most popular times to visit, both for the water levels and for the general accessibility of the area. If you're planning a trip in shoulder seasons, check local road conditions before heading out — Northeastern Ontario roads can be unpredictable after freeze-thaw cycles.
