Trail description

Description

Chippewa Falls is a waterfall destination in Northeastern Ontario, tucked along the Chippewa River. The falls drop approximately 26 metres, making them one of the more dramatic natural features in the region. Whether you're coming for the roar of the water or just a solid half-day outing in the bush, this spot delivers.

The Trail

The walking trail covers 5 km with about 150 m of elevation change, and most hikers wrap it up in roughly 30 minutes of moving time — though you'll likely want to linger at the falls themselves. The path leads down to the base of the falls, where you get a ground-level view of the full drop. There are also viewing platforms along the way that give you different perspectives on the cascade, so it's worth pausing at each one rather than rushing straight to the bottom.

The terrain follows the river corridor, which means the trail has some natural variation — rooted sections, a few rocky patches near the water, and the kind of uneven ground you'd expect close to an active waterfall. Nothing technical, but sturdy footwear is a smart call, especially if the ground is wet.

The Falls

At 26 metres high, Chippewa Falls has enough height to generate real noise and mist when the water is running strong. The falls are best experienced in spring and early summer, when snowmelt and rain push the flow to its peak. That's when the cascade is widest and loudest, and the mist can reach the lower viewing area. Later in the season the water level drops, but the falls remain worth the trip — the exposed rock face and the river channel below are interesting in their own right.

The Chippewa River cuts through the Canadian Shield here, and the geology shows. The rock walls framing the falls are ancient and worn, and the river has carved a tight gorge that funnels the water into a concentrated drop. It's the kind of place that looks like it belongs on a postcard but feels genuinely remote when you're standing at the bottom.

Getting There and Access

Chippewa Falls sits in Northeastern Ontario, and like many natural sites in this part of the province, getting there involves some driving on rural roads. The falls are accessible from multiple viewing platforms, and the trail to the base is clearly defined. There's no technical scrambling required to reach the main viewpoints.

Spring and summer are the most popular times to visit, both for the water levels and for the general accessibility of the area. If you're planning a trip in shoulder seasons, check local road conditions before heading out — Northeastern Ontario roads can be unpredictable after freeze-thaw cycles.

What to Expect

  • Distance: 5 km
  • Elevation gain: 150 m
  • Estimated time: 30 minutes moving time
  • Falls height: 26 metres
  • Best season: Spring and summer for peak water flow
  • Footwear: Trail shoes or hiking boots recommended — the ground near the water can be slippery

Chippewa Falls is a straightforward hike with a genuinely impressive payoff — a tall, powerful waterfall in the heart of the Canadian Shield that's accessible without requiring a full-day commitment.

The trail to Chippewa Falls was decent but quite muddy during early spring conditions. The 5km hike took longer than expected due to slippery sections, though the waterfall was impressive with high water levels from snowmelt. Would recommend visiting during drier months for a better hiking experience.

Chippewa Falls is a decent hike though I found the paid parking and entrance fees somewhat disappointing for a relatively short trail. The waterfall itself is impressive and the forest setting is peaceful. Trail markers could be clearer in some sections, but overall it's a solid option for a quick outdoor adventure in the region.

Visited during winter conditions which made the hike more challenging but equally rewarding. The frozen waterfall created a magical winter wonderland scene. The trail was more difficult to follow in snow, and the elevation gain felt more pronounced in winter gear. Beautiful scenery but definitely requires proper winter hiking equipment and experience. Would recommend visiting in warmer months for less experienced hikers.

Winter hiking on this trail was a magical experience with snow-covered trees creating a winter wonderland atmosphere. The trail remained accessible despite the season, though ice cleats were necessary for safety. The frozen waterfall was absolutely spectacular and provided incredible photo opportunities. The moderate elevation gain felt more challenging in winter conditions, but it added to the adventure and sense of accomplishment.

Winter hiking to Chippewa Falls was magical with ice formations around the waterfall creating a spectacular frozen landscape. The trail was more challenging in snowy conditions but manageable with proper gear. The 30-minute duration estimate seemed accurate for our pace. Definitely recommend bringing microspikes for better traction on icy sections.
